As the title suggest, when i hold the rear wheel at 12 + 6 and 3 + 9 there is play in the back which i would have put down to the wheel bearing.... Not a problem I will just order new ones "Sigh"

My question is there are 2 bearings that could be at fault, is one more common to fail than the other? and before I order both I take it it will be a wise move doing both?

I cannot answer the specific problem but if you need the actual wheel bearing go to an engineering type shop instead of BMW, they are really cheap and made in Sweden mostly. I had a new bearing put in in the wheel hub and it only cost $30.00 all up. (That's Aussie play money, not real world money.) I thought I'd try and do it myself but after struggling to remove the old bearing I gave up. Good luck.

Was it the large ball bearing you replaced or the smaller needle bearing?

The bearings you refer to are within the final drive and should only be replaced by someone who knows their stuff. You should also replace the pinion bearings in the drive After replacing them you would need to set the backlash of the driven gear and this is NOT a job for the uneducated in the ways of rear drives.
It would be very easy to think it is OK and then have it slowly disintergrate over the mext 5000k

Thanks for your reply Rick, for the backlash to be set up correctly would the engineer need the whole bike? or just the bevel box? just been reading of words of caution about it being done correctly with comments about even BMW techs don't re-shim but often just pop it back together.... makes you wonder who you can trust to do the work for you!

It would certainly make sense to have the whole box rebuilt properly

The engineer will only need the drive itself. It wouldn't supprise me at all if they just shove it in and slam the top on.

That's the worrying part about them not setting it up correctly.... I am just having a read of the Clymer to see what is involved....

Its not a very difficult job but you need to know how it all works and have a supply of shims and the tools to tension the pinion shaft nut.

I agree rick if you dont get the shims right it will be loose with heaps of backlash or to tight and slowly grind the hard facing of the gears.
The pinion nut is 200nm and the seal retainer ring is 118nm plus you need to heat the case and have some way to hold the f/drive whilst doing all this.
I replaced the input seal but i wouldnt do the bearings myself.

It's most likely the big bearing. I've got through 2 on the outfit but the original small taper roller bearing is still fine.
Replacing that bearing, assuming the input bearing is OK, doesn't disturb the gear shimming.
