I was just giving the bike a check before booking its first MOT in 12 years and could not select any gears, found the gear lever splines damaged, see the pics below. If I get another lever do you think I would get away without replacing the shaft as well?

No teeth on lever? What kind of lever is it?

I presume it's original k100 RS there are faint traces of splines which don't show on the picture.

I dont believe its original. Every K lever has a teeth inside. I think you need proper lever. Even you shaft teeth are damaged it would work with proper lever (if you clean it) Ali, if you dont have any source of used parts at home try Motorworks.

Do you think there is enough of the splines left for a new lever to get a proper grip

Its worth to try. Clean it first and try to reshape teeth and chanells with some tool. When mount new lever align it (line on shaft, cut on lever), put 6 mm bolt and tight. I think could be quick and cheap solution.

You need new lever anyhow, so try cheaper solution.

No, Ali that's not an original lever, it looks like an obscure steel lever that someone has bored out to go over the serations and clamped up without any positive location. The original is made of alloy and should look like this:-

Gear lever: am I screwed? Sam_0016

I would try a new/used lever but the serations will need to be cleaned up with a triangular needle file (or a diamond file if they are hardened).

Good luck,
Paul.

The lever has been welded where the spline part meets the lever so I think you are correct. I have manged to get another lever this evening so will try re-cutting the splines while waiting for it to arrive.

I had a shift lever strip out on an old honda I had. I drilled a small hole in between shaft and shifter. Likes keyway. I used a roller pin in the hole and it lasted years .

It always feel best when the smooth shaft has no teeth marks evident, yet you've made it fit anyway, and you don't feel like you've been screwed.
