Hello everyone. As you all know by now I'm new to all this, but, this week-end I am going to (drum roll) change the pads in both the front and rear brakes (ta dar!). Well, at least thats the plan! Took the front calipers off this morning (to have a look), with no real problems (er....good, I hear y'all say), but looking at the rear caliper,....er....like what do I do first? Un bolt the caliper, losen the brake line retainers, take the back wheel out, take the exhaust off, take the shock off? Blimey, how hard can it be? At the moment the rear brake is merely a movement of my foot, while my brain tells me 'yes, that's how to work the back brake' (I then carry on at the same speed, like Homer Bleeding Simpson!) (I promise, I will buy a Haynes manual soon!). Terry.

By the way, I assume once I get all the calipers free, it's just a case of removing the pins, pushing the pistons back and putting the new pads in after giving everything a good clean, and a bit of copper slip?

You don't need to take the exhaust of, just 2 x 10mm socket head bolts and off it comes.
Whats this buy a manual buy! buy! Have a hund around the download section after Crazy Frog has given you the password (you need to ask him) and download it here for nix. Also a Clymer and a factory manual.

I'd just have a look from the back 1st remove the 2 screws that hold on the rear guard they are above the number plate then inside the seat cowl undo the 2 nuts to loosen off the bit you cant see of the rear guard, then wiggle out the guard, remove the back wheel and then sit on it and have a good squiz at the caliper, remove the plastic cover and see the 2 pins that hold the pads in, they tap out the pads come up and the pistins can be seen to clean all insitu. then push em back stick new pads in and check for functionality, reassenble all you took apart, have a torch ready, they is in a dark place they is

Easy Tezza, just don't, I say don't push the brake pedal when you have the old pads out and the new ones sitting on the floor ready.

It might indeed be handy to loosen the rear wheel, but you don't need to take it out, just lean it against the exhaust. You can leave everything else in place then.

And don't forget that spacer!

Hi there, if you are only going to replace the pads there is no need to remove anything (but the panniers if you have them) just the pins.

IIRC one of the pins can't be removed completely because of the rear shock. You might be lucky/have a different shock.

Hi Rene, mine is a K100RS ABS and I´ve done it with the original shock and with the current one (progressive 465-1101). Reckon it was easier with the original but still doable.
