I finally taxed the bike yesterday after recently buying it... So I could go out for a ride... and so off I set, i travelled a small distance just in case of any miss haps, all instruments and lights were working perfectly, abs lights went out and triangle light went out when brakes applied.. after 25 miles all was ok, a nice ride, silky smooth gear change, engine sounds good apart from the overun at about 2500 rpm and theirs a noise like 2 knuckles grinding for a slight second or two but goes away when accelerating or it drops below 2500rpm, but its their when setting off once warm as well, Thought it may be chain?. Anyway I got home still all ok.. later that evening I went for a another ride in the darkness on the motorway for another 50 or so miles.. And so set off from Sheffield and arrived tother side of dewsbury at a mates place (everything still ok)... now after a few hours I decided to head back, Now did all the idiot checks, then proceeded to start the bike????? she wouldnt start so messed with the choke... she still wouldnt start, so left a minute and then full choke and she eventually sputtered into life, (now I have noticed when riding around especially on overun their is a strong smell of rich exhaust gases? and so proceeded to set off and the ABS and triangle light on (flashing) so pressed reset button and it was contantly on for about 10 mins or so and then flashed again but didnt go out on the journey back.. but I checked brake lights to make sure they are working, now I have noticed since I have had this bike I have never heard the ABS working (buzzing Squeeling sound.. so my question is can you reset the system so it works for a certain mileage (ie best practice for selling) and then it rears its ugly head after a while??? because that is what I think may have happened to me.. even when I went to view the bike the abs light went out, but defo didnt hear the modules working when brakes applied.. Can anyone shed any light on this... I know their are topics on ABS and I have read them, I have also been on fc2.com and had a read.. So im going to test the brains and circuits to see if i can find any fault codes, but it seems strange that the ABS light have come on permanetly after about 50 miles or so, thats the bit I cant get my head round!!! By the way you should not hear the ABS modulators running except a very slight buzz for 1-2 seconds when you turn the key on and the engine isn't running.

Well ive just gone out the the bike, checked the brains for connection.. all ok... switched ignition on and heard the relays... started her up depressed both brakes and set off quickly.... and...... hey presto the lights went out, but did lock up the back wheel though with extra pressure whilst braking on the rear, but didnt hear the modules... but the bike started ok... now I wonder if the difficult starting last night put strain on the electrical system and set the fault lights off and they wouldnt reset. So not sure what caused the fault, maybe what i should have done was pull over last night and switched the bike off and restart this may have resett the system...

A low battery will upset the ABS but to reset you need to do a reset it won't do it by itself.

Battery is fine Rick G im not sure! but im leaving it until it comes back? unless when all lights on when setting off has given the impression of a low battery?

Rick is correct a low battery voltage can cause the ABS to show a fault. You should not be able to permanently lock the back wheel (or indeed front ) the ABS should step in and cycle the braking on and off until you come to a stop. I would suggest if you were able to lock the back wheel and the ABS did not cycle that you run the diagnostic with an analogue multimeter and read out any fault code. If you have a problem with the ABS brain Tosi should be able to fix it, he is very quick as is postage to and from Japan and the cost is more than reasonable given that a second-hand one with no guarantee of longevity will cost around the same and Tosi replaces a few age vulnerable components which at the time were state of the art but now there are better replacements available. He did mine when it packed up on a ride and I am more than pleased.

Just a brief note on the ABS reset switch what is does is cancel the
flashing but for only 10 minutes or so before it starts flashing again
and needs to be cancelled, I am sure this is an example of the engineer
in the factory deciding that the rider needs regular reminders that the
ABS is non functional. The other problem often confused with the ABS as
they share the same light, is the bulb fault warning which is easily
triggered by a poor bulb to socket connection hence my regular banging
on about treating every connection and bulb socket with DeoxIT to
prevent bad connections.

Cheers K-Bike.. As an MOT tester I often lock brakes on the rolling road whether Non Abs or Abs, the point of locking the wheels was about 3 mph.. I gathered the switch was timed as it came on 3 times in my 30-40 min journey, dont get me wrong these bike are ok but they are over engineered with to much electronic gadgets.. I have read many a thread about Toozi, and may take this route if things dont work out, I know yesterday after my tests, I left her for an hour and she wouldnt start what so ever, so read up on this forum and found array of information, in which I already did my checks, and thus disconeccted the ECU and ABS brains, checked contacts and refitted, I also checked the multi plug between the tank and the alternator for connection.. and hey presto it started!!! Anyway where is the ABS socket? Is it a flat 3 pin? and what colour wires for Identification purposes knowing I have found the right plug.. My bike is a late 89 K100rtic, i have looked in all the suspect places and cannot see a plug with a blanking cover?

It is under the right side cover and is a flat 3 pin with a grey blanking plug but the blanking plug may be gone

I thought it may have been this one, as I couldnt find any other that was under the seat or in that area that has been described in previous posts..

I have tried to post a piccy, but you need a degree to work out how too, so given up, but now ive worked it out.. so here she is.. soon to be a lovely colour.. might even be the same colour as my Tiger...

Well since these small issues, I had the alternator overhauled, as this wasnt pumping full amps and I was loosing about a volt, since this task the charging system has been brilliant, it has also eliminated the glow of the battery light when under full load. the Alternator is a 32amp unit? but the guy who serviced it did say he has a pile of 60amp units from ex police bikes, and if interested would renew the internals and sell to me for £35...
Now since ive ironed out the electrical gremelins on her ive done 1800 trouble free miles, But never got round to sending my abs unit to tusi.. I did all the reset checks, I did the diagnostic volt meter test, in which this idicates the abs brains, and I did email tusi, but i was going to test my unit on another working bemmer, but i dont know anyone in the south yorkshire area who has a k100.. so ive taped the light so it doesnt drive me potty or distract me on the night ride and continued on.

Shes been serviced with all oils replaced.
Ive also tuned her up, and done the emmissions as she was running at 3.7%co now she is running at 1.7%co and ive noticed more MPG, ive also balanced the Injectors (boy were they out), and she runs alot smoother, but I still need to paint her up.
She is by far growing on me, I do every now and then tinker with her, recently ive added a multi cigerette thingy in the left storage comartment, and added holes for the wiring for various electrical gadgets, im soon adding a metal plate to the compartment cover so I can use a magnetic waterproof case for the smart phone..
Im also looking into touratech frames for the K as ive alloy boxes i wouldnt mind using, as they look better and hold more weight than conventional luggage, and are certainly watertight..
