To all, Need help with vin number for 1985 K100rt. Replacing fuel pump assembly and product indicates pre 05/85 or post 05/85-92. Which vin character indicates month? Thanks.

So is this the only way to find out the year of manufacture? Is it not possible to read the last seven digits and find the information for the date of manufacture by interpreting those seven digits using a few known rules?
Thanks
Shep

Not the only way there are heaps of sites like http://www.bmbikes.co.uk/colourschemes.htm
There are no simple rules for VINs. If you know which country of manufacture (germany in the case of BMW) and their numbering scheme within the system and the codes they use for cars, bikes, trailers etc you have a starting point.

The date of manufacture of the engine gives you a good guide as to when but there are many brands that just record sequential numbers and record what month started with which number.

Shep,
Look at your engine number. The second set of 4 numbers indicate the week and year of manufacture,
say 1785, that would be week 17 of 1985.

Paul.

So I go out and write down the engine numbers on the two bikes:
On the 1987 model the engine number follows the rules I have been given with the spaces as shown:
104EA 5086 2169 ----- 1000 cc, four cylinder, (emissions compliance??) -- Week fifty in 1986 which is December -- then a sequential number
On the 1985 model the engine number is all run together and I think it is FBM not F8M:
FBM098745K3308418379 ----- So here because of prior knowledge I see embedded 987 (probably cc) and 3084 corresponding to week 30 or July 1984

All this is done out of curiosity and wanting to interpret K numbers on bikes for sale that I may be interested in purchasing.

The engine number tells you when then engine was manufactured. That's all.

Decoding the VIN tells you when the bike was assembled and is what the BMW parts catalog is based upon, both online and at your dealer. Your bikes's wiring and many other parts are based on the VIN, not the engine number.
