Hello all again, I'm in the process of replacing the auxiliary output bearing, the one for the alternator. It seems I'm getting a bearing noise from that side of the engine when running. I'm assuming(yeah, I know what happens when you assume) that the bearing is lubricated by engine oil. Taking the bell housing off, I notice there's not evidence of a lot of oil. Is it getting lubricated by oil mist from the engine? Anyway, I picked up the bearing from a local bearing dealer and got a sealed unit, which the salesman popped out as the one I had was an unsealed unit. Has anyone had any experience putting a sealed bearing in, would it be advisable or not? So I'm hoping I can stop assuming and tap into the knowledge here for an answer one way or the other.
Thanks all.

Brickee - you can pop the seal out.

Are you talking about bearing #3 in the diagram below?

Auxiliary output shaft bearing B0000134

If so, then a sealed bearing is OK. I replaced my bearing in this location last summer and bought a sealed unit. BTW, you found out that the OEM bearing (part# 11141460805 GROOVED BALL BEARING - 20X42X12) can be substituted with a standard off the shelf bearing, #6004. The bearing that fried on me was sealed to begin with. There is very little engine oil getting into that area of the bell housing.

Thanks Robmack, that's the info I was looking for, so I'll go ahead and install the sealed bearing.
While I'm in the bell housing I'm going to replace the clutch disc, it's getting down and the splines are showing definite wear. The best price I've seen so far is w Motobins $85.36 US. Does anyone know of a better price new?

According to MAX BMW, 11211460696 COMPRESSION RING also is a one time use part.

Thanks for the feedback. I hadn't thought of replacing the rear main seal, but it is a must do. By the way, the bearing I took out was a 6004, so it seems they don't have a very long service life due to the lack of oil. The sealed one is going in and we'll see how long it lasts.

If a meter doesn't fix it, it must be mechanical.
