simple trick to do a spline job with ease without removing the whole ass end.

instead of removing the swing arm and rear wheel, leave them on.

get 4 extra long 8 by 150 mm bolts.

remove all the bellhousing bolts and screw in the long ones.

slide the whole ass end back on the long bolts and the transmission pilot shaft will appear.

smear it with red spline grease and put it back together without even removing the back wheel.

What a great tip. Thanks a lot. I didn't even think about that. I have used that trick on cars, but never even thought you could do it that way on a k-bike. Isn't there a seal in between the housing?

I use this trick to slide the gearbox in place, but never thought of using it for the final drive.

G'day Mikeeee,Thanks for that great tip.Although Ulrich had mentioned it to me,have never been quite game to try.I'm halfway through the spline lube job with swing arm removed so should attack the clutch splines as well using the 4 bolts????.Just waiting for the right grease to arrive from Collins Indust. It's a good trick but I have never used it on a K because I have never pulled a gearbox to do a spline but done the spline when I have had the gearbox out for work on it or a clutch.

Tom, and others, you may find that if you use the GA50 by itself it will dry out on the splines, though it'll take some time for that to occur. I mix a very heavy base oil grease with it, approximately 3 parts GA50 to 1 part grease. The grease I refer to is Castrol Optimol Optipit, with a base oil of 1000 Cst viscosity (many greases are around 220 Cst), and this particular product has a tacky additive also. I mix it up in a small container using an icy-pole stick. If you wish you can also add some powdered Dixons graphite. You will then have a product similar to the Guard Dog stuff from the US as it is a combination of Moly and Graphite and it's reputed to be excellent for heavily loaded spline applications.

Would bearing grease do the job ? I have 2 litres of SKF LGMT 2TH/2 sitting in the shed doing nothing .

The SKF grease LGMT2 is an all purpose automotive grease of grade 2 spec. It has a base oil of 110 viscosity and no tacky additives. It is suitable for wheel bearings and such. It's not really what is required for our application. This application is fairly unique, not often seen in industry, rare in automotive circles these days, but quite common in agriculture on PTO applications but all those situations are short use types (impliments etc). So a special application requires a special solution, that's why we need to get it right. If you intend to mix the GA50, try to find a grease which is recommended for extreme loads and slow speeds, these will normally have tacky additives and some Moly (around 3-4%), but the heavy base oil is what is required. Belray make one called tool joint compound, it is recommended for diamond drilling rod connections. Hope this helps.

Thanks Dennis. The reason I asked is that I had to get the grease for a particular job and have heaps left over. Have you ever had one of those days when the wheels fall off?

Well last week I did. Had the plough out for about 15 acres, checked my right all the time to see whether the wheel was following in the right spot and then glanced to my left. Something wrong....wheel missing..It fell off about 10 metres earlier. Even though I had checked the bearings at the begining of this exercise, the outside bearing of the wheel collapsed. Boy the wheels fell off that day!

Probably around a teaspoon. Cover it, but don't slather it around.

Well finally did the spline lube thing on saturday, pulled the driveshaft out and did inner as well. Only problem being when i pulled the F/D off there was about an tablespoon full of oil sitting at the end of the driveshaft. Also some oil underneath at the gearbox vent hole

So i cleaned everything down, pulled the centrestand so i could degrease underneath. Put it all back together(even put the new springs on the side/centre stand) and checked on Sunday to see if there was any oil anywhere, there is a dribble coming out from the bottom of the gerabox.

So it looks like the gearbox input shaft seal is gone as well as the output shaft seal.

Going to see if i can get the seals from Bearing Services ( we get all our stuff of them here at work) Just got to work out what sizes they are.

Anybody no off hand what they are. The spline lube was dead easy though, thanks to all the info on here.

Is there product from Loctite that will do the job? I have problems getting the other stuff.

I can't find anything from Loctite but the came mob market a Dow Corning moly grease that seems to be much the same as any others and about 3% moly.

Thanks K Freak, I'll try and chase up some. Blackwoods here can get get Molybond but by the 2 litre....bit too much in quantity and cost. No one else can stock the stuff or get it.

Rocol do a 50/50 moly compound they of chain grease fame I have seen it used in the mob.

Great tip might try it out next week if the weather warms up a bit much to cold down the garage otherwise,been below zero lately.
