Hi Guys

I put some fuel in my k100rs today and got it started after 6 years of it sitting under a cm of dustt (I also did an oil change). The bike started wonderfully, i was quite suprised. Problem now is that ive got about 5 litres of fuel dripping from a tiny hole somewhere underneath. I intend on removing the tank eventually but in the short term what is the best way to drain the remaining fuel??? Any help would be great.

Steve

Syphon it is the way I have to do it and as for the hole it is most likely just under the pump where all the crud is drawn to. The aluminium gets coroded and eventually a hole appears. I have fixed several now and use the permatex stuff that comes in a dual strip. You just nead it till its mixed and press it over the hole after a good sanding to bare metal, let it set for 36 hours and bobs your uncle (Aussie for done and dusted). I have never had one leak yet after that stuff.

Thanks K Freak

I ended up syphoning all the fuel out as it was stinking out the garage. Where is the best place for buying permatex and I am guessing that it goes on the outside of the hole. I'm located in NSW so we should have similar stores to QLD.

Just about any auto store will have it. I got mine from an Auto One store. Its a ribbon of epoxy about 25mm wide and blue one side and grey the other.
I know about the fuel stink I pulled some injectors of an old K100 engine a few days ago and the rotten fuel is still stinking the place out.

On my solo I repaired the leak by opening up the hole and using a nut and bolt with fibre washers and jointing compound; I did the outfit with a self-tapping screw and JB Weld. Both have been OK for more years than I care to remember.

Is this Permatex ethanol proof?

Paul.

I can't say for sure Paul but most likely. I only put ethanol in mine when I know I will be running it out in a few hours and never let it sit even overnight, it absorbs any water in the tank and gets rid of it. It is most likely that water caused the hole in the first place.

I removed the fuel tank today and found that someone else had made 2 dody looking repairs to some fairly big corrosion holes. I ended up cleaning everything away and starting again. Hopefully it will hold. If I can work out how to attach a photo to the forum I will show you.

Wow Steve, I've never seen one that bad before. If that's permatex you've used, keep us posted as to how it holds up over the next few months.... or years.

I've just had a swig of your virtual beer....cool.

Paul

Just looking at those photos Steve it appears the material has shrunk a little towards the centre of the patch. If it's done the same on the inside I would be inclined the give it another thin layer for strength.

I agree with 88KE height is not an issue there so a good layer is no problem.

I can see what you are looking at and I thought the same thing. I was able to get my finger on the hole from the inside and spread a little of it there as well, so it is sealed for now, only time will tell. If it leaks again I'll get the tank welded. It looks like aluminium ,am I correct???
