Just bough my K bike at auction two weeks ago and getting it ready for the road. It's my first bike and I'm glad its a famous BMW K100. She runs (stopped the blue smoke with a fresh oil change) and its been fun riding around my neighborhood a few times. I'm mechanically inclined and looking forward to learning what I need to do so I can enjoy this machine for many years.

Welcome Freebase you have chosen a grand machine. If an oil change solved the blue smoke problem it may have had too much oil in it.

Alright! You folks are nice. I have a lot of questions, and I'm going to work through all the topics and maybe start some new ones soon.

The oil looked good through the glass on delivery, but the smoke appeared the second time I started it up. The oil looked dark now instead of the nice amber color a few days earlier. A few quarts of oil and some SeaFoam stopped the smoke immediately. I'll let that run a little while and then do a proper oil change. I hear that these machines are tough, so I hope the engine didn't take too big of a hit.

Thanks for all the well wishes, I'm even more excited about my K bike. A toast to our Grand Machines!

The Ks arre famous for the smoke trails the leave. When lrft on the side stand after running the oil drains from the top end and some goes into the bottom of the cylinders and seeps past the rings to cause smoke. If the exaust valve is open at that time the oil gets into the exhaust and muffler so leaving a smoke trail. Best way is to just deny it ever happened and smile or park it on the centre stand all the time.

Thats what I mean, what smoke?

I have been able to minimize by keeping the oil level just to the center of the glass. still every fifty starts or so ...
one time on the closed deck of a ferry she was bad, side stand, tilted deck, here we come, smoken !

Smoke is a badge of honour, it identifies the age of your K. I just did about 850 kilometers without being able to use my centre stand. I left a smoke cloud outside of every coffee shop and Maccas throughout the state. Thank God for EFI and fast get aways.
Enjoy your bike mate, mine is keeping me sane. (ok, not so sane, you know maybe a bit mad, but not like anyone notices.) Who typed that?
Man I need a rest.

"but what is sea foam?"

Have a look here.

We go on about DeoxIT for electrical stuff.
Sea Foam is the equivalent for engines and fuel systems.

I really, really, really want to get my hands on a couple of cans of this, but I don't think it's available in Oz.

Freebase?

I hope that means something to do with sking and not some crazy drug! Never mine, I want to welcome you to the forum also. All the members explained the smoke issue, so lets just say i concur.

You might want to use the tip here on the forum for lubing the rear splines without disassembly. If I remember Crazy frog may have posted it or knows who did,

What auction ? Was it EBAY?

Really nice looking bike, what did it set you back?

Insurance auction in Colorado. This bike had a clean title, 35k miles actual and verified to run and drive. I slipped in and raised the bid to $750 and got lucky. Auction fees were almost that much, plus shipping, but I think I still did pretty well.

I'll clean her up for some pictures soon. I've been concentrating on getting the bike roadworthy, and now she is making me smile.

SeaFoam is hopefully doing some good work and she will run even better than she already does.

Auction fees are really getting high. Man! A guy just can't get a break!

I've gone to some of those auctions, it can be like a feeding frenzy. Some times I have watched the price go above what the item is even worth. Crazy huh? Congrats on the purchase. About the sea foam, my wife loves to call it "Tune up in a can", I agree with her. Nuff said!!

Hope it helps, As far as the smoke, in Minnesota we call it bug killer smoke, and as a courtesy we won't charge for it!

Dino P.S. "Behave, cause we know it is hard to do" Yeehah!
