Last time I read an article on converting a K to carbs the performance was no better but fuel consumption increased quite significantly. It was about 4 years ago and I didn't keep a copy. I will stick with EFI personally.

Pajonk I would have thought a set from the Yamaha FZ1000 of the mid eighties would be more suitable as they were designed as a downdraught carby. Keith

The only time I would put a carbie on a brick would be if there was a turbo between that and the engine.

fuel consumption increase ? .....isnt that the aim ...more in = more out

Here's a thought there was a view in one of those alternative mags about the 21st of dec 2012 being a special event in our life times as its supposed to send or suck the coronal mass ejections from the sun far enough out to burn our atmosphere in doing so wrecking all the computors and the efi's and the transistor ignitions.(buggered if I can recall the three letters for the ignitions) Nexus or New Dawn or something it would have been. But if it was anywhere near faintly possible. We could still ride if we used carbs and points (although I cant see us just pinching a set of honda four points and backing plates as our engine spins the other way) but it would be doable. Then again if the bike were parked when it happened then I spose the next day we would just turn them back on again and away we would go. Oh this is just waffle isn't it. Keith

worth a laugh keith ....but your right, not always is the high tech solution the only way to go ....in years to come if the mad max and catastrophe movies are to believed, we will all have to resort to what we can find locally ....

G'Day Charlie I read of and sat through a lecture on an event that happened 100 odd years ago where the telegraph stations had blown up due to cosmic rays as they called it back then. Today with our electric web (the grid didnt exist earlier) and our phone web and the steel fence and tin shed connectivity i would rather hope we dont experience another one. But if we did, I would have to figue out away to stay in transport. Untill then learning how to fine tune our K wagons till they litterally brissle is what its all about. Once fired up and truckin the next thing to do is figure how to finesse the things into more of what you like from it. Be it mid range or fuel economy or smoothness. and I will still search for the blokes who have done the oddball things like that euro site some years ago where he ran one on carbs and also rebuilt his own injectors by running kero through them to clean them, always great stuff to read, Keith

just a heads up keith,,,,what i have seen in my part of the electronics industry is quite amazing ....just a few years ago we were playing with light erasable eproms ...cpus and so much else .....(all verry prone to such events ) these days there is a whole raft of protective devices built in as standard to the latest offerings of high tech manufacture (inbuilt robustness to bad handling ,,electrostaic discharge and power rail protection and emi rfi standards that far exceed past woefull designs )....of corse there is the cheepy knock offs made by dubious manufacurers without all the design features of the original product ... it may not quite be as many fear, if using premium product ....you do rememeber the y2k failure of doom and destruction ....no ?

but lets be honest our old beasts were ahead of the pack and i suspect open to some ....erm enviromental damage ...but i have to say i havent seen many dead electronic processors ,,,just output driver devices seem to die from lack of care and lots of electronic abuse ..."fuzzy" electrical connections seem to be the worst ...

but i too love the simplicity of well thought low tech aproach to problem solving for many they dont know the history ,,,so cant reflect on the alternatives to acheiving a result in an authoritive way ...we have a world full of engineers that really dont know the basics and fail to recognise simple "good practice "designs and replacement due to failure .....we have several at the company where i work .....that still design stuff that is at maximum design limits at mnimum load ...

years ago i was working supplying components to electronics enthusiasts around the north coast nsw ....about that time "the rainbow power company " came into existance ...developing fantastic things like pelton wheel generators ...useing spoons as the collectors of a fine but steady stream of presure to an armature of car altenator .... almost free power from the gods ...just needed a long piece of poly tube to create a head height from a small pond of water and a small venturie for the presure feed ...to the wheel.... brilliant low cost inventive design .

As the Yanks say, "this is my 2 cents worth" - nothing comes for free, especially when you are looking to focus on improving 1 aspect of an engine. Any HP increase must come at the expense of some other feature, be it reliability, noise, fuel consumption or a combination of these things. Sometimes in the quest for more power, the next weakest link is found. BMW were very clever in their design for the K100 8V engine, as they went for an under-square configuration (bore diameter less than strike length), which gives a larger radius crank throw, but of course the trade off is higher piston speed for given RPM's. So to off-set this they went for Nikasil cylinder linings which reduce friction and wear incredibly well as well as reducing weight and transferring heat. Now this could go on forever, but if one thinks about it the K100 was well ahead of the pack when it was developed, sure it didn't go as hard as a Z900, but a Z900 was never going to last for 300,000 Km's + either, and so on. BMW got it right, they achieved that balance between performance, reliability, economy,noise (super quiet, which pisses everone off even more when you overtake them) maintenance costs etc. Never ever even contemplate putting carbs on this engine, leave it as is and enjoy it for the engineering masterpiece that it is. Look for a K1, a K100RS with a 16V engine or go for a K1100 if you want a bit more mumbo, but leave tham all as they were created. There,...... that's 2 cents worth. I feel better now.

Yes Dennis very well said, good to hear the electronics have become robust though, then again the most common thread in hear is for the E/L connections I had wondered what would happen if the harness was replaced with a tinned wire harness such like is found on marine wiring. perhaps gold connectors. I also figured the auxillary drive to the alternator could be quietened by using a fibre gear, that would elliminte the k whine or whistle that everyone speaks of. A really quiet bike that suffers no electronic hiccups ?? Also carb fail you when it comes to super charging far better to have throttle bodies then. - Keith

The tinned wire won't help much, the major problem is the effect of the moisture and contamination on every electrical connection and plug and socket, old cars suffer in the same way. Gold connectors also have their problems especially when exposed to contaminants after being put into use. The solution to those problems is the application of the full DeoxIT treatment to every electrical connection on the bike. For a really quiet bike the full electric would be the way to go but not much range. I recall there used to be a guy with an electric Triumph Herald car around Ealing and that was eerie seeing it accelerate away really quickly in almost total silence.

Keith, the whine is the trademark of the K engine, (my opinion) is that it sounds really wicked. I had an Aprilia Climber Trials bike with a 280 Rotax engine and that had straight cut primary gears which made a very similar sound, really nice, so others used to comment as well. Listen to a K100 pass through a town at 60 Km's in 4th gear and that whine sounds great ! Long live the K whiner I say, and yes, it really annoys those on the air cooled bone shaking tractors when you silently blow them to the weeds. Excess noise is just another form of wasted energy, better to put it through the rear wheel.

Hi all yes I must admit when a mint K comes strooling bye I do start to drool, just an aside my 750 has a rythmic whine, part of the 3 cylinder 240degree harmonics I guess, the fours have a much shorter rotation between power strokes. Also we have a altimeter plug we can remove if we ever get high enough ya dont get that with carbs. Keith P.S. I havn't been high since oh well last century.
