I saw this about 4 years ago on a factory visit to Diebold, they make full size replicas of ATM fronts so they can try them for look and feel before going into full scale production.

oh just remembered, the plans for the 3d printer are on the internet, you can use you 2d printer to print them out, then with some diy stuff (see macguyver) you can hook yr pc up to your 3d homemade printer and print out a commercial grade 3d printer and start a business.

Remember this post?

Well, today I saw a 'domestic' 3D printer for sale at Maplins for only £700.

http://www.maplin.co.uk/velleman

I thought these devices would  always remain an expensive industrial luxury, but hoonose (as Rick would say) what will be available in a few more years.

Paul.

Last year, I was helping mentoring students building an ROV.
Designing a set of efficient propellers is very complex and requires a lot of calculation and testing.
Because the budget was limited, it was impossible to create a mold, cast a sample, then machine it to find that the design needed to be refined. The solution was to use a 3D printer.
The project could not have been done on budget without the use of this new technology. (I saw the first 3D printer in 1986. the cost was over a million $).
The only problem is that the material used doesn't compare to steel or other metal and you cannot stress test the product. But, it's great for design and feel.

By the way, police in the USA already found guns made on a 3D printer. Hey it's not steel and it's not sensible to metal detectors. Design are available on the Internet. What a Face

The assembly of the parts will be done by robots.

Here is an interesting video. What I found the most innovating is at 3:48min when they show the robot "retooling" itself. This can be compared as changing your hand when you need 7 fingers for a specific task.
Soon these robots will be manufactured on a giant 3D printer. Smile
