Have run R80RTs for the last 22 years on my daily commute but now finding them a little down on power. Cars and trucks are so powerful these days. Toy'd with the idea of a late 80s none ABS K100RT. My reservations over their complexity have gone after discovering this truely excellent forum, and am now actively looking for one. EBAY to the rescue. John

Welcome to the forum John. I'm using my bike an '88 LT for runs to the city centre and it's very good. Bags of power, easy cruising and good road presence, whilst still nimble with the panniers on. Give your self time to sort the basics and with help from the forum the complexities will fade.

Hi John - I am also recent to the forum and have an 87 K100 LT - seen a great 93 K1100 on ebay at the mo which my son was going to go for but he settled for a Kawa ZX6R ! The K 1100 is 251016201205 on ebay and is low miles (50k) with 12 mths tax and MoT so worth a look - cheers Maenad

Well despite being given the chance of a K100rs for free, by one of the incredibly generous forum members, I have aquired a 1990 LT with 50,000 miles on the clock. This is the bike i was really looking for. Picking it up tomorrow. It had better be as good as you guys make them out to be!!!!! John

Welcome John. K series isnt complex at all. By my opinion its peak of german moto engineering, reliable, practial, user friendly easy to maintain. Mine is 29 years old and still sounds like new and goes anywhere, sit and go. In England you have better service for K than in Germany (Motoworks, Motobins).

29 years old? Do you have one of the very first K100?
If it is, this model was designed to run with leaded gas. Are you still finding leaded gas?

The production of the modified engine to run with unleaded gas started in January 85 for K100 with frame number 0007291, November 1984 for the K100 RS (frame number 081107) and frame number 0024999 for the K100RT.

I am just wondering how you are managing.

After a couple of weeks riding YOUR bike, I am sure that you will be one of the first to promote the K100.
It takes a couple of rides to get use too. After 2 weeks you will sleep in the garage with your new baby

The K might seem complex but in fact its not so hard to look after. I ended up with what appeared to be a major problem, non starting [no action from starter] and looked at the Clymer manual. It said to take off most of the lower fairing parts, rad enclosure, depressurise the fuel system and remove the petrol tank. Pain in the ass. Anyway after a little investigation I simply removed the leg liners and the storage boxes and a few other brackets that restricted the petrol tank [a good opportunity for cleaning it all too]. The tank lifted up easily and a timber wedge was enough to let me at the starter relay. A bendy screwdriver and 8mm socket soon had it out. Having done all that it seemed too easy not to clean the starter. I had it off in the time it took to make a cup of tea and proceeded to strip and clean it. All was good and was back in the bike in an hour.

In truth the fiddly bits were taking fairing panels and storage boxes off but that applies to any fairing and they were easy. Getting at the bits was easy.

The second time was about a year ago, developed a misfire. Suspected the worst, got spare spark plugs and changed them, cured it. Moral is start at the simple end. They are sensitive to spark plugs, and spark plugs can fail with only a few thousand miles on them.

Parts rea easy to get, motorworks in UK are popular and I have used them, excellent website for new or secondhand parts. Motobins also come up and of course eBay.

So far quite happy with it and would get another. I like the LT for storage etc. It does challenge me on height though, am 5' 8" and 32/33" leg which is marginal.
