hi guys justa quick one .

i installed the replacement bevel drive a couple of weeks ago but have had a leak from there .

i initially thought it was a output shaft seal and bought one to replace it with .....after dissasembly i found the screws for the halves of the drive were in fact loose ...which i tightened and replaced the seal anyhow .

i still have a leak but its now from the seal which i replaced ......

does it take some little while (killometers) for the seal to take up ? as ive only done about 50 or so over the last couple of weeks
i have linished the shaft so that it would "bed in" in a rotary fashion ...around the circumfrence of the shaft ....(ouchy ouchy skin off knuckles )
and the leak is now only a drip or so ...but always wet at the bottom of the drive .

seeing that tommorrow we have this planned ride ....do i replace it with a new one and take more care in installing it ?
or should i let it bed in some more ??

What type of oil are you using in the FD?

I've read reports where owners have used synthetic that resulted in minor leaks; they were eliminated when they switched to dino oil.

hmmm..... hadnt thought of that blakey as its a new seal .....but im useing castrol epx 80-90 .....smells really odd ...which makes me think its synthetic i guess

You should be able to use synthetic, particularly with new seals fitted. You hear at times that changing to synthetic resulted in leaks; not that often anymore as dyno oil has lots of cleaning agfents/dispergents dopes as well. Mostly it had to do with old build-up under/at the seals that was taken off by the synthetic and therefore resulted in a leak. So with a new seal you shouldn't have an issue.

well i guess ill just take some oil with me ....and review the seal after a few hundred ks have been put on it.

i dont think ive seen this happen before ....mostly everything has been good after replacement and i have done all i thought was sensible ...perhaps ive stuffed the inner seal in the installation

Don't sweat it too much, we'll pull it apart in the car park and sort it out tomorrow arvo...
