rich ... keep in mind

the load shed relay relys on the brushes in the starter motor making good contact ....basically the earth for this relay is taken through the starter .

so start at the load shed relay ... and good luck

Thanks Charlie, I am just about to try to test all the relays, the problem is I do not know which relay is the load shed relay, there are quit a few the box.

did you click berts link ? it is the layout of the relays in the box the load shed apears to be the middle at the front of the box .
might be a good idea to check the fuses also ?

As Charlie99 said, if the brushes on the starter are bad, the headlight won't work.
Here is a quick and dirty test:
Start your bike
When the bike is running, ground the connection of the starter (DO NOT PUSH THE STARTER BUTTON WHEN DOING THIS TEST!)
If the headlight is working, the problem is related to the starter's brushes.

You want to replace the brushes on the starter? Have you seen the tutorial about this?
Spend time to read every post, and you may know as much (or maybe more) than a BMW mechanics.
Some of us are more experienced and we don't always think about mistakes that a 'newby' may do. For this reason, when new owners are fixing something and make a mistake, if they let us know, we can warn the next new owner to pay particular attention to a specific area.
