Hi All,

Can anyone give me some advice on bike lifts? I would like to clean up my frame and respray it so I need to take it off the engine, but at this stage I do not want to pull the engine apart, so I was hoping I could leave the bulk of it together and put it on a lift for a few months.

Something like this maybe?

Should be perfect to support the engine for a few months.

Keep an eye on the bolts at the top.
I got one similar to this, the top bolts is rather short and
have a tendency to unscrew themselves after some use.

That looks like it would be good for lifting an auto gearbox into a car or similar but to leave the engine sitting on it while you work on it the handle parts could be very inconveniently in the way.
If I was going to lift the frame away from the engine then there is a good opportunity to give the injectors and air box etc a good service and clean while its easy to get at.

My lift has 'legs' deploying on the side. It gives a lot more stability to the bike.
I wouldn't feel comfortable to work only with the narrow lift.

Hi kgirl
I have had ongoing problems with a bike lifting table. The Chinese made hydraulic piston has given out on me 3 times, each time they replaced with a new one but I cannot leave my bike up overnight for example. The lifting capacity is supposed to be 500 kg, which does work but slowly comes down.

No Mr. Inge you are quiet correct. I was just throwing in a scare in case kgirl (hello) was talked into buying a lifting table. Here in Oz it is almost impossible to buy anything not cobbled together in a hurry in China, made from low grade Aussie iron ore and cooked with low grade Aussie brown coal and skipping the quality control man at the end of the conveyor belt.

Here's a pic of my bike up on my Chinese lift. It has a lever that pushes down to stop
it from lowering. I had my Vulcan 1500 on it once with both wheels off and came back
to find it all the way down! I use that lock now!

Anyways you have to find a way to keep the engine from rolling off it. The bottom is not
very big and wiggling the frame off might tip it off the lift!

Kgirl,

If you want to remove the frame to repaint it, you don't really need a lift.
What you need is to park your bike on the center stand and then put a solid block of wood under your engine. You can then lift the frame and have the power train staying on the ground with even the back wheel attached to it.

Look at my first restoration page and you will see that I didn't have a lift.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the info/ideas, I tried to get one of the lift/stands today but they are out of stock and won't get them in for a couple of weeks so I might give Crazy Frogs idea with the wooden block a try.

Oh ya, I didn't think you could leave the center stand on and do it easy. I was doing the spline lube and it
has to come off for that....

Cool

Its never safe to leave anything jacked up on Hydraulics alone, stands to take the strain is the safest bet like CF's type jack and Inge K's stand like all things there is a vast array of products out there of various quality.

Good workshop practices and safety is always the way to go

I use a cruiser stand for lifting the front (or the rear if without stand), like THIS, but thought about adapting something like THIS with an adapter to fit the holes in the sump where the BMW bracket is bolted.

This might be a stupid question but I'll ask it anyway. If I make a stand similar to Crazy Frog or Inge K will I have to physically lift the bike onto the stand?

1. Park the bike on the center stand.
2. Grab the top of the rim and lift the front wheel above the ground.
3. Kick a piece of wood ~3/4" thick under the front wheel.
4. Place the support under the oil pan.
5. Remove the piece of wood under the front wheel.

The support I`ve made is to be used together with the center stand.
Used alone it isn`t stable enough.

My wooden stand works great, but I would advise to have a second person helping you when you install it.

I added an extra security to the wooden support:
When the back of the bike frame is resting on the support, I rested another piece of lumber on the frame and used C clamps to tight(sandwiched) everything together. This way, the bike is very stable.
