Hello good people. Here is a question for the electrically smart ones around here.
This morning the odometer and trip meter stopped spinning over. Everything else is 100%. Tacho and speedo and all the telltales lights are just fine. I swapped the pod over with a known good spare I have and the odometer and trip meter and all OK and roll over as they should. So I'm guessing it is something inside the instrument pod. I have removed the gears and they all appear to be in very good condition. They all turn freely, engage well and when turned by hand, both the trip meter and odometer turn smoothly and freely. Any ideas? Is anyone able to let me know where do I begin looking and diagnosing? The Pod is from my 1983 K100.
Cheers all.

I would put odds on it being gears the small white one 12 teeth is often the problem. If the teeth look OK then check that the gear is firm on the shaft it may be cracked and then the shaft wont turn it.
I have been in that situation so replace all the gears and DON"T put any lubricant on then they are self lubricating. If you don't replace all the others they will soon fail.

Yes Rick, I found several teeth missing on the second gear down from the outside.  It must have been quite an epic failure after so many years.  I've found the Odometergears.com website and I'm currently looking through it for the right set of four.

Cheers.

Ricardo  sell the gear  he on this site and on facebook

If you don't want to do it yourself I have used Lionel Otto Instruments  and never had a problem  with his workmanship.

I used Lionel Otto recently as they are local to me.  The turnaround was to be a few weeks, however it was ready the next day.  Cost about $170.

From the outside it looks like a wooden shack but they do a wide range of instrument calibration, older vehicle instrumentation and some aviation stuff.  Well recommended.

I have just added a K75s to my collection. The odometer is not working and I see the 1st gear on the shaft is stripped. The other gears were also not well and very brittle. just touching them and they break. I have two spare clusters but they have the same problem.

My question is, how can one get the 1st gear off the shaft and where can I get new gears sets?

Our Kluster of K Kronies Kweensland have been doing our own repairs for quite a few  years now. I've been getting packs of assorted Teflon gears from Aliexpress for around $6.00 Au per pack. Dan ( StandardK ) has been assembling the gear train by gluing and metal pinning the gears together. Members bring in their instrument pods on Workshop days and only pay to replace the gears at the current Aliexpress prices. I keep a few sets of restored gears on hand and I also have a box of assorted functioning and non functioning pods that I have at times stripped for parts for members, instrument faces, pod shells, GPI and clock modules. Donated pod parts are generally free, pods that I have purchased I just try to cover costs. So far I think we have restored over 8 members pods with no failures of the new gears. Anyone who wishes to repair your own see https://www.k100-forum.com/t16244-rebuilding-a-k-odometer-using-inexpensive-eby-gears-a-rough-guide#188108 courtesy of Dan.

That's been a great help, thanks Laitch and Martin.

I have accessed Aliexpress to look for the correct gear sets. Martin, can you give any indication which set to select. I could probably measure and count gear teeth but if you already have the info I would appreciate it.

I must add that reading through the posts on this forum is really very uplifting. There is so much knowledge and the genuine help is so positive. Thanks again.

The sets required for replacing gears on metric KPH pods are the New Style 58 Styles Plastic gears on Aliexpress. If you need imperial MPH gears you need to check the number of teeth required for Imperial and compare it to the list on the Aliexpress advertisement. Have fun. bounce

I just replaced my odometer gears and used the slick K-diag program for  [url=I replaced my odometer gears and used the slick K-diag program. A few comments: - Getting the small, 12 tooth, gear on the odometer motor shaft - I checked the old gear with brass insert and the gear was even with the motor shaft. - I used small needle nose pliers around the shaft and pushed the gear on to start - For getting the new gear flush. I pushed on the motor shaft with a razor blade and was able to get it flush BTW, this gave a 0.5mm gap at the base. Thanks Glenn, I am still waiting for the gears. But I have no clue what the K-diag and Karamba programs are?

Can you explain please?

Hi Rolf,

Take a look at this thread please, https://www.k100-forum.com/t16615-password-to-the-karamba-program#220999

Meanwhile download the K-Diag program:

Found it under Misc, "Calibrate your speedo, fix ABS,TPS,Motronic with K-Diag"

Glad to answer any other questions you have tomorrow.

Do you have a laptop? If not you could do it with Speedo on bench and a desktop with maybe a little more trouble.
