I'm located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

I have an '85 K100 which I'm hoping to have ready for an out of province inspection (Alberta, Canada) in the summer/fall of 2024. One of the inspection items is an exhaust system with heat shield cover intact.

My '85 has the stock exhaust but the heat shield has been removed and tabs ground off before I got it.

I'm looking to either buy or locally borrow the 2 valve stock exhaust with heat shield. Doesn't need to be pretty it just needs to be decent enough to pass this inspection. I'll re-install the one I have now after the inspection. If someone does have one to lend me, you can borrow mine so you can keep riding!

FWIW... my current muffler part number is Gillet 3087 18121451528.

Let me know what you got.

Thanks,
Chris

It's a shame that a missing heat shield prohibits passing inspection when most motorbike exhaust cans don't even use one 'nowadays'.

You'll need a 1983 thru '85 only version, then, due to the different mount from the '86 model year on.

Appreciate that clarification Two Wheels, that just may have saved me a headache with buying the wrong year. Thank you.

Yes, inspection ridiculousness, I'm sure I'll be shaking my head even more when I get that report back.

This heat shield is not actually unnecessary...OK, it's ugly and rust friendly.
I thought it was useless, simply preventing dumb passengers to melt their shoes on the muffler.
But the day I saw a toddler, fascinated by the big motorcycle with shiny parts, running towards the muffler to grab it... I understood why it was so necessary!

I have pre and post 85 Ks.

At varous times I have picked up new old stock heat shields for both early and late exhausts.

So I can tell you I put a brand new later heat shield on my 83 K100RS and it fits straight on.

The early one has 5 fixings, the later one has 6 fixings. If you need to, you can buy the fitting and captive nut and weld them on to fit the 6th fixing, or just leave it blank as I did.

Hope that helps.

This does help, I appreciate that specific feedback. There is an '86 heat shield local to me so with your fitment information that's an option for me. Thanks!

This has been solved. I picked up a local '86 heat shield for $30 CDN and fitted it to my '85 muffler with stainless steel zip ties that I painted black. I added some hardware to make it stand off from the muffler a bit. It's not the prettiest but it passed an Alberta out of province inspection.

Well, that's all you needed. Will the heatshield be looking for a new home?

I did previously state that I was ripping it off immediately post inspection, however.... After about 700kms of zipping around town and some longer day runs it hasn't caused any issues that I can tell so it may be staying. I know some complain about it vibrating and buzzing but I haven't noticed it.

It does look alright after the spray paint I put on it. The zip ties look better than I thought they would. I'll post some pictures in my other thread dedicated on the topic.

I recently picked up 2 early heat shields, brand new original stock. I have 3 early Ks. I have another good condition one that needs repaint so my Ks are shortly getting a cosmetic upgrade. The heat shield on my RS is shot and it was brand new in 2019.

But I can tell you the later heat shields actually fit the earlier muffler. I have done it, all that happens is you are left with one hole without a bolt as the early on is 5 fixings and the later one is 6 fixings.

Just take off the footrest hanger to give yourself space.
