Just got a 1985 K100RT with under 20K miles for $1000. The bike has an inch (2.5mm) of dust and dirt on it since it's been sitting since 1996 in a garage. It is shinning up really nice but I have not attempted to start it up until I do an all fluids change and brake pads. Hopefully the "old beast" will fire up once I figure out how to get it all primed for clicking the ignition on. I've ordered a few needed parts from ebay and prior to them arriving in the mail I'll get the fluids changed out. This is my first BMW. Not really wanting this model as I'm a dual sport rider here in southern coastal oregon, but the deal of a BMW for $1,000 sounded like lots of fun and the bike is just broken in. I usally ride a Suzuki DRZ400s so this BMW is going to feel like riding a couch or a float in a parade. But, I think my wife may join me on the "Big" bike for a ride? Should be a fun! Thanks, Bandon

Goodonya, mate, sounds like a bargain! We don't get prices that inexpensive on bikes like that here in OZ any longer. Spend some time on that big fine girl and you'll begin to appreciate the bike. Those southern Oregon roads are fine for a bike like this. I lived in Portland for three years a while back and rode all over the state. A coupla things...it's doubtful the terrifically low mileage is original, unless of course you know the history full-well, as the instrument clusters came undone on most of the early models, especially in damp climates. The other is that those American millimetres are small compared to ours! We measure the inch at 25.4mm. But eventually with some luck yours will gain in value like the good old Greenback!

Well, here in Oz we have the Big Pineapple, the Big Prawn, the Big Banana...the list goes on!

Now we can add the Big Centimetre! Very Happy

Welcome Bandon!

Welcome to the forum.

If the bike is in good shape, this is a bargain.
Since the bike has been sitting for so long, I would recommend to empty the gas tank and check if the rubber mounting of the fuel pump or the hoses are not disintegrated.
You don't want to burn the pump or fill the injectors with dirt.
After renewing the fluids and before going on the road, you should check the splines and grease them. The old grease maybe dry and you don't want to ruin the final drive.

good luck with your project.

Bert

Thanks to all and sorry about the decimal point being off for the metric types. It was a late posting after scrubbing the front forks clean. I appreciate the help and wisdom passed down to a rookie BMW owner.

No worries, mate, all in good fun. Goodonya for getting out the elbow grease and attempting to bring back to life one of history's truly fine motorbikes. Ask away almost every question you have (about 'bikes - you probably don't wanna enquire about any other arena of life from us) and you'll get some good answers. The collective knowledge contained here is just bursting to be let out!
Cheers.

Yep, just got the same bike going this weekend after sitting 6-8 years as well. Drain the fuel tank for sure, all of it, then rinse it out. Check the injectors for operation, they may be sealed shut/dead like mine. Also, pull the fuel pump out of the tank and test it for operation with a 12 volt battery. It could be seized from sitting so long (repairable).

For me the list was: drain/clean the tank, repair tank (small pin holes at bottom seam on sides), new battery, new oil and filter, new tranny fluid, new final drive fluid, new front tire (yours are guaranteed to be dry rotted after sitting that long), set of used injectors, repair seized fuel pump.

Still need to service the headset bearings (near seized), flush brake fluid, spline lube. But I know she runs! Smile

Well this is my second K, the first resto was a K100RS, and that's where I cut my K teeth. This one is easier the second time around. Bandon, do you have enough to do yet?

Don't forget to always change the fuel filter when putting back into service.
