Hi everyone!

I’m new to motorcycles and restoring bikes but I thought I’d jump straight into the deep end and buy a 1991 K100LT. I’ve been working on it a couple months now with a friend and it’s been such a fun exercise (except for when bolts on the cylinder or exhaust headers seize up 😂).

I’m hoping to get recommendations for my build like how to take the abs off so I can paint the frame without having to re bleed the whole system??? Etc.

Anyways looking forward!

Cheers,
OJ

i would go for the re bleed or leave it off and alter the braking setup , quite a few do just for the weight saving alone .

Draining and refilling the brakes is a minor task compared to the work you have to do to get the frame redone. It's probably easier to drain/refill the brakes than do workarounds to keep from doing it.

It's a good opportunity to swap in braided SS lines. Motobins in the UK is where I get mine.

Thanks both! I’ll probably end up taking it apart and bleeding the system when I put it back together like you suggest. I just thought it was harder than normal as I read somewhere you need a specific piece of kit for bleeding k100s.

I’m really keen to keep the ABS even though it is heavy and clunky as it’ll be my first bike after getting my full license and like the peace of mind of knowing it’s there.

I've been riding since 1986 and like ABS. It's never saved my life but it's saved me a few fairings. (When there's "invisible" slippery stuff at the end of a stop.)

Bleeding the ABS1 system is really pretty easy, it only adds about 10-15 minutes to the procedure.  It is the ABS2 system on the later K1100's that can be a little more of a challenge.
