I struggle to see how a valve stays in place of one is missing and cant see how one falls out. But having said that a K is much eaier to check it on than most bikes. Means taking cams out so get yourself sorted for checking and adjusting the valve clearances too.

Having done a valve guide seal job on a 16valve motor I am befuddled at how that collet could have "fallen" out.  Those collets are held in place pretty securely and need a valve spring compressor to remove.  I can only think it got lost during a head job, or during initial assembly of the engine which is even more hard to imagine.

It sounds like you have some "interesting" work ahead of you.  I hope you keep us posted on what you find.

Hi yea I couldn’t work out how it would have come out on its own. Should of said that the collet from the sump has got wear on it so think it had to been dropped, took the plugs out after work as didn’t have time yesterday, from what I can see there’s no damage on the pistons ie dropped valve. One of the star head bolts is chewed an a mark on the head next to that bolt and below it so does look like the head has been off. Yea will defiantly keep posting what’s happening

34K and the head has been off?  What kind of life has this bike had?

Let's hope the previous visitor to the internals used anti-seize.

Yea that’s what I through after seeing the bolt, shame really as the bike is really clean. Yea I hope so, sort of looking forward to stripping it, really didn’t think I’d be doing anything to the engine apart from valve clearance

Here's hoping the collet you found didn't come out of one of your valves.

If indeed you need to install it, it is possible to avoid pulling the head by holding the valve in place with compressed air and compressing the spring with a valve spring compressor that does not contact the face of the valve.

Piccies of what .75 is talking about. I had to make an adapter for the Brick as one was not available at the time. I just used an old spark plug broke out the porcelain and tapped it out.
Regards Martin.

Hopefully it isn’t, even if I did drop the collet I really don’t think I could have just left it. Ok well that would save some time, soon as I start stripping it il know what’s the next step. Least I’ve got the old plugs an got a few airline fittings in the garage. Thanks for the help

Some types of head in place spring compressors might not work or may require modification to fit. I've never used mine on a Brick cylinder head. Someone may be able to supply pictures of what will work.
Regards Martin.

Hi all. Had a look at the bike today, checked clearances all within. Intake not missing the collet but on the exhaust side can see one of the valves is missing the collet an another one doesn’t like it’s sitting right as looks different to the rest.

If anyone wants to know, took the head off as wanted to sort it the proper way, all valves and seals out everything cleaned, lapped the valves now just waiting for the gasket set from motorworks

Nice work!  Did you find where the collet/keeper came from?

Many years back I spent time in company of some rally drivers who were constantly rebuilding engines. A conversation about valve bounce was in progress.......... how in certain conditions a collet could come loose. I know K bikes generally cannot over rev so there should be no risk.....unless there are tired valve springs.

Did you by any change note clearances on the strip down?

Hi, yea I was speaking to my mate an he said about it could have been over revved, suppose not just if it had high milage but it the age of everything. Yea done the clearance before I stripped it. Got all the buckets in the right order but did write down what sizes they are just in case they got mixed up somehow
