A totally routine use of Vegemite for me of a morning is whole meal (what 'Mericans know as whole wheat) toast, lightly buttered (salt-free butter, but why bother?), a proper thin coating of the infamous V, then slathered with American-style crunchy peanut butter. This covers the Yank side of me from Dad, and the Aussie from mum. Sometimes I lash out a bit and press a thick slice of Swiss cheese into the peanut butter for extra protein. I dated a Swiss lass once, so that must be for her.

Hot chips with sweet green relish isn't far off odd for some, either, but that was a childhood staple in Tassie.

Ah, but getting to the serious questions now.

Do you expect beetroot as standard on a hamburger?  Of course the answer is Yes.  And it is mandatory to dribble the juice on your shirt.

A hamburger made without beetroot is a hanging offence*.

When my brother and I drove thru McD's in Oz one night we both ordered a #3 meal of because it looked from the picture like it had a nice slice of Canadian bacon on it. Imagine our shock and disgust when we discovered is was a f'n slice of beet.  You guys are nuts.

I used to work with a lot of guys from Louisianna, one of the guys by the name of Big Mitch had a crack about Ozzie food. I told him ( at the risk of being thrown overboard) that the US may of invented burgers but an Ozzie burger was by far superior to the US one. Mitch fired up and just about cleared the room. So I told him to put his money where his mouth was. I said the next time he was in town to go to this shop and just order one with the lot without stuffing around with it and then we would talk. I didn't see Mitch until a couple of weeks later, when I was sitting in the smoko room and the door opened and the sun blocked out and there stood Mitch. Who said Ozzies are weird??????? 314318 The other guys knowing the run in that had previously occurred actually started  to clear the room. Next minute Mitch beamed and went into his recital about how he went into the burger shop and ordered one with the lot. He said it had a beef patty, lettuce, tomato, pineapple, cheese, egg, bacon and beets and tomato ketchup. His verdict was it was the best goddammed hamburger he had ever had and then announced that I was his buddy.
Regards Martin.

My Pamela always stirs a half teaspoon of Vegemite into the gravy. Some sage one says, "don't forget a dollop of tomato sauce, for sweetness and that extra tang."
