Here's the blow-by-blow...('85 K100 RT w 24,000 mile - barely broke in)

  • Replaced injector O-rings to attempt rough running at 35-4500 rpms.
  • While still on the lift, I attempted to start the bike to check for fuel leaks or other badness.
  • Fuel pump worked, starter would not engage.
  • Determined that neutral switch wasn't closed (even though the green neutral light was on)
  • Wiggled shift lever
  • Bike starts!  Runs Good! Very Happy

  • Went to ride home.
  • Attempted to start bike.
  • Fuel pump worked, starter would not engage.
  • Green neutral light was on.
  • Pulled clutch.
  • Bike Starts!  Runs Good! Crying or Very sad

  • Stopped for gas on the way home.
  • Attempted to start bike.
  • Fuel pump worked, starter would not engage.
  • Green neutral light was on.
  • Pulled clutch.
  • Bike doesn't start! Mad

  • Decided to panic, use foul language, honk horn, push buttons, etc.
  • Bike Starts!  Runs Good!
  • Get home and switch off ignition key and kill switch.
  • Headlight and Instrument cluster lights remain on, everything else switches off. :suspect:
  • Attempt to restart bike.
  • Fuel pump worked, starter would not engage.
  • Green neutral light was on.
  • Pulled clutch.
  • Bike doesn't start! Evil or Very Mad

  • Switch off ignition key and kill switch. Headlight and Instrument cluster lights remain on, everything else switches off
  • Pulled ALL the fuses.  Headlight remains on.
  • Disconnected the battery.
  • Headlight goes out (thank god).
  • Went inside and prepared cocktail and this post.  🤡

I think I either need a new headlight or voltage shedding relay...or a priest...or put the old O-rings back in???

Any thoughts out there from folks you may have gone down this path before?

Thanks in advance!

Your starter motor needs an overhaul, remove it and replace brushes. Search for it using google, there are many posts.
Not a difficult task at all.

The headlight-bone is connected to the starter-bone????

I read some of the posts regarding the issue, and the odd symptoms that arise from a crudded-up starter-bone...but the headlight not shutting off???

I will do this thing and report back...

This is most probably the ignition switch. It has 3 circuits. Parking lights, running lights and ignition systems.
It is a known problem which can be fixed with a little maintenance. It just gets a bit dirty and a little worn.

I would be replacing the load shed relay as well, it was sticking when the lights stayed on and those bosch relays are usually very good but once they stick they only get worse.
