Hi guys and gals , got my clutch apart and just checking the wear on the friction plate , its currently 5.5mm thick , specs recommend replacement at 4.5mm . how much use can one get from 1mm and how thick is a new plate? im inclined to replace it but im curious 

Experience on here shows that 3.5mm is about the screaming 'replace me!' point. I've run one down to 3.0mm before the constant slippage finally got to me. As for 'how much use' - that depends on how heavy your right hand is. Could be as little as 20K miles, could be as much as 120K miles.

About 5.5mm check that the steel plates aren't dished which makes them slip as they only touch at the outer edge.

I had trouble with slipping way before the thickness limit, wear on the mechanism was such that it couldn't clamp properly any more. I have a lathe, so after removing the location dowels, I was able to turn down the three raised portions to compensate. It was some time ago, I can't remember how much I took off, but I measured the wear on the pressure plates and took that much off. It wasn't a lot 0.5mm or so! It' run for at least six years like that!
