Recently I went thru my  1988 K 100 RS and everything was real good.I took her on a 2000 mile or so camping trip and she ran and still runs great but on this ride the clock would just change times all on it's own.I'd reset it and it would be fine for a few hours then out of nowhere it would be very wrong .Is there a way to fix this  or is this a symptom of a bigger problem waiting to happen? Or, is just a failed clock to be ignored ?

It's a failed clock. The clock is completely independent of any other component on the bike and its failure will not affect the operation of your K100.  There are a couple of buttons on the clock.  It's possible the buttons are going intermittent and need cleaning.  Remove the clock assembly and carefully clean the buttons with electronics cleaner like Deoxit.

Don't rule out the possibility of an amorphous, free-floating time warp. Next time it happens, carefully observe if anybody near you is wearing knee britches, a tricorn hat or a tight-fitting mylar jumpsuit with padded shoulders.

Is the time skipping forward a couple hours(or minutes) or is it going back to 1:00?

Skipping time could be the set buttons while a reset to 1:00 is more likely to be a power connection somewhere since the clock is independently powered from the rest of the bike including the cluster. Even a momentary interruption will reset the clock to 1:00 and since the power is separate from the rest of the bike, you won't notice anything else happening on the bike.

I would start by shooting Deoxit on the big cluster connector.

I hate it when the leprechauns try to keep up with the times.

Hi, back in 2012 I repaired a clock with a shim to increase the pressure on the contacts to the LCD, have a look here:-

After forgetting all about this non problem last week the clock mysteriously came back to life and is keeping time after being dead for over a month. Go figure !

As we age, whether it be man or machine we sometimes need a little time out to rest and get ready for our next adventure.

If you remove the clock from the mounting the array of contacts can be cleaned with an eraser or Deoxit can often work. I have revived 2 clocks like that but be gentle.

+1  I did the same thing to one of my clocks with Deoxit and a Q-tip.  Gentle is the key.

Thanks , next time I'm in there replacing bulbs I'll clean things. It's not worth the effort just for the clock and besides , it's working again now correctly for a couple weeks so far . I just thought it was strange how it came back to life after a month or more of being dead and now keeps correct time .
