Introduction Old54 – I have been a member of this forum for a number of years and enjoy reading the posts. But due to inactivity on my account it was removed by the administrator. So I have re-joined the forum and will now share this part of my life with members as my introduction.
In July 1985 my younger brother purchased a new BMW K100RS. Sadly a month later he passed away at the age of 24 years after suffering an asthma attack. The Bike had done 1911km. My grieving parents put the bike in shed and there it stayed for more than 30 years. In 2016 after my father passed I took possession of the BMW. It had just sat at the back of the shed with feed bags covering it amongst bales of Lucerne. Very dirty and the wiring loom eaten by rats, what would it be like? First thing was to pressure wash the bike and remove decades of dust. What a surprise and credit to BMW the paint work and general appearance came up amazingly well. Even shinny with a bit of polish. The petrol was never drained, every part of the fuel system need attention. New hoses, fuel pump, pressure regulator, injectors cleaned and rebuilt etc. New oil through out, spark plugs, filters and battery the moment had come - time to see if the engine would run with just a few cranks of the starter motor the engine sprang in to life. What Joy ! After several local rides 20-50km the fuel consumption seemed excessive. I took the bike to a BMW bike shop for tune but still know difference? Then I was talking to a fellow K100 owner who casually says have you checked the valve in the tank? No did not know there was one fitted I replied. Sure enough the spring and ball in the valve were rusted so it did not operate once these were replaced the bike ran like a dream. A pair of Pirelli Sport Demon Tyres and we were on the road again. I have now put an additional 12000km on the K mostly on club runs around the local Shire on the Far South Coast of NSW Australia. I also own a BMW R1150R but the K rides and handle extremely well for a bike of its age and is fun to ride. In addition my wife likes the seating position on the K as a pillion so win – win.
