The trip meter knob consists of:
knob
washer
spring
washer
circlip
If the circlip comes free (probably because of not fully retracting the knob when taking out the instrument panel ) the circlip, last washer and spring will ricochet around inside the cluster housing. The circlip is very small (7 maybe 6 mm) and attempting to reassemble everything in situ is a great example of ‘doing the same thing and expecting a different outcome’.
The reset shaft enters the binnacle through a plastic bush which is held in place by flexible teeth
If these teeth are prised gently inwards, the bush can be pressed out then bush, knob and components are easily assembled outside the housing.
