Hi all, just thought I would share my K100 cafe racer project. Very new to the BMW bike scene.
Had plenty of bikes over the years but always fancied a K100 after a ride on a friends in the mid 80’s.
After loads of fast road bikes I decided I needed a change and just wanted something engineered well, reliable and shaft drive, so the BMW sprung to mind.
It didn’t take me long to find a donor bike and after a few days I bought a 87 RT from Brisbane.
My plan is to do the engineering work and layout first then drop the engine etc and send the frame and wheels for powder coat while I strip the engine and check for wear.
My wish list includes:
Swap the exhaust from to other side of the bike and leave the wheel open.
Chop the seat down to single and tail unit housing battery.
New bars clocks and warning lights.
Lots of nice bikes on here and the web so plenty of inspiration.
Will post pics as I progress.

Its been a busy couple of weeks at work so not had the time to post any updates.
Frame wheels and engine casings back from powder coating so built back up to a rolling state.
Tig welded the exhaust completely up after just being tacked before, new tyres etc so getting closer.
Still a few custom parts to make but should be on the home stretch now.
Also picked up a K100RS 1991 on the way so the next project has started.

The seat unit is one I made myself from 2mm thick alloy plate.

I mocked it first on solidworks then cut the flat pattern by hand and tig welded it.

I will get the next one laser cut as the slot in the back for the light was hard work.

just the seat to go so took her out for a quick 50km test.
All good but a definite hesitation around 4k.
I am guessing its timing so will try and adjust that tommorow.
Very impressed with the handling but nothing really to compare to as this is the first k100 Ihave ever ridden. The back brake is sticking on so will need to look at that.
All in all I am really pleased with the bike and cant wait to get started on the next one.

I am hopeing for a rev on your next vid, it sound good in that last one. be aware if you clean the master cylinder that there is a tiny hole behind the feed for the reservoir that needs to be free of debris.

Boy oh boy that has a gravelly sound, not much pipe work for the sound to travel through, but just enough of the K sound to allow us to recognise it as a K. That is a great bike. Love the seat colour and style, Colour really sets off the bike, Do you intend to do bargrips the same, I doubt it possible for footpegs but the bargrips? too much maybe????????
Thanks for taking the trouble to provide me with a sound film clip. I really enjoyed it.

Your fuel cap is installed back to front which blocks the drain hole on the left side of the cap recess. Spin it around or cut another divot out of the other side.

Nice paint work

Started my other project today a k100 RS.

Much better condiiton than my RT so should be a quicker and easier conversion.

Will convert this one to a two seater so I can take the Mrs out with me :-) also me and my boy can ride together :-)

Everybody has cafe racers nowdays why don't you have something unusual like a well sorted K100RS 16V, a magnificant bike in it's own right.

Rick,
I know where you are coming from as the K100's are a fantasticaly engineered bike, even by todays standards. This is what makes them such a good bike for these projects,  the engines on both of mine are internally in great condition although the bodywork on both are far from perfect.
Unfortuantely all they would ever have been is scruffy examples of a once great bike.
This makes it easier to strip and build something different.
Hopefully the bodywork etc will keep another better example going longer.
If anyone needs any parts let me know I dont want anything for the bits I have no use for.
I understand the beauty of restoring old vehicles having spent hundereds of hours under MG's among other things, but there is always a place for the modified.
I agree though that to chop a nice example is a crime.
