The '87 I'm picking up does not have a gas gauge. Can these be added?

Yes, most of what you need is on eBay. They're usually paired with a temperature gauge.

On the LT, the gauges are on a crossbar above the instrument cluster. Figure a couple hundred for all the parts to add them. For some reason, it's easier to find what you need if you look for parts from a K1100LT too. They're interchangeable.

There are any number of dealer and other sites to use to look up the part numbers you need. My favourite is www.realoem.com but dealers like Bob's BMW. Max BMW, South Sound Motorcycles, and others have links to BMW's ETK (Elektronik Teile Katalog).

Here's a link to real OEM:  Real OEM BMW Motorcycles US Models

If you have any specific questions about how to use BMW's catalogues or how the part numbering system works, ask away. There are many obliging members on this forum.

One other bit of advice that is useful to others when you're asking questions, is for you to go to the Signature line in the Profile tab above and add your year and model, even the last seven digits of the VIN to your profile, so we know what it is you're talking about without having to search back through your posts to see what model you might have mentioned days or weeks ago.

If you don't have the instrument cross bar the panel that is under it [behind the cluster] is marked on the rear face for the cut outs. So I discovered on my K100LT.

There is a shelf just about the dash but I'm not sure if that is what you are referring to but I'll look into it.
