Gents (and ladies),

1988 K100RS, my backlight in the fuel gauge is not working.  Pulled the gauge to take a look but cannot simply remove the bulb.  I didn't want to force anything, so thought I'd see if anyone has been here before me and knows the obvious little trick to remove the bulb.

I haven't been there before you. My bike only evolved to idiot lights. Maybe these images from the MAX BMW parts fiche will aid in visualization.

1) Do it with the gauge face facing up. Otherwise the bulb can fall out and then you have to shake it like a six year old's toy to get it to fall out.

2) Twist the socket while pulling.  You won't break anything.

3) Once the socket is out just push a little and twist the bulb counterclockwise.

Yes that is all correct. I've had the back plastic case off, and can see the bulb socket (last picture) in the back of the gauge metal casing, however when I pull on it (gently so far), it doesn't move.  If someone can confirm its just a press in fit I'll get more physical...

Thanks duck.  You and I were posting at the same time...

"press fit".  Maybe when it was installed in 1988.  Today it was a pull and twist and grit the teeth kind of extraction.  After all that the bulb was fine.  Classic issue on these bikes:  the ground on the back of the fuel gauge was corroded.  Cleaned it up and now I can see my gauge at night.  Thanks for the tip Charlie.  I don't think I would have applied that much effort to pulling it out if I didn't know for sure it was a "press fit".

So i got replacement gauges for my K1100LT [originals are very hazed] and installed them but fuel gauge back light is KO. Nothing in Haynes or Clymer on replacing this bulb but thanks for this one.....but...what kind of bulb is in there? Not listed in the manuals.

Meant to add, Olaf, that the 'hazing' you see is the anti-fog layer peeling off the back of the lens.

Yes, I took one apart to find out... Laughing

Did you get it back together ?

I have a few gauges like this that have suffered light and being outside in the past and would love to be able to repair them.

The real problem (assuming that you successfully get the bezel off in usable shape) is that when you peel off the anti-fog layer, what's left is much thinner and will rattle around when you peen the bezel back on. I polished the inside with an anti-fog product (too lazy to go look) and resealed it using a thin layer of Threebond. Truth to tell though, Simon, I have no idea how long it will stay non-fogged.
