By popular demand, it’s on again. 😀
(Well, I hope it’s popularly demanded.)

February is often too hot, and April is getting close to Easter.

All else is open to suggestions.
It’s never possible to have a time that works out for everyone, but I’m happy to take suggestions for:
A) which weekend
B) route/ride plan

Between us, we should be able to come up with a plan.
This far out (Oct 2019 as I write), nobody can guarantee their availability, but please only make a date suggestion or agree with someone else’s suggestion if you have at least a reasonable likelihood of being able to make it for those dates.

Cheers,
Bill

I expect to make that next year Bill. I have no particular dates at this stage but I think a weekend in March would be good.

Cheers, Nigel

It is well known that I have always struggled to find an appropriate birthday present for my wife Sharon (19th Mar) and that is why I shouted her a couple of trips to Jindabyne. And after this years superb rumble through the Vic Alps, I can see no reason why I should not present her with a similar trip next year. Count me in at least.

Thanks, Matthew. I'd been thinking I should give this a bump.

Rick G's suggestion of one of the last two weekends sounds good to me, and works for Pegasus, but as always there are potential flies in the ointment. This would likely be true for whatever dates are proposed.

  • For those who are in the BMW Touring Club of NSW, 21-22 March has been suggested as a Classic BMW ride to Nabiac. Not confirmed as happening, just been put out there.
  • The BMW GS Safari website has no details of their route or accommodation stops, but we'd probably be OK anyway, as it seems they don't start from Philip Island until Monday 30, leaving Sat 28 and Sun 29 clear for us.

Over to the Krew . . .

Bill

28-29 suits me better as I will be finished my 12-month-long immunotherapy treatment by then.
It's a long way down for me. It will take me a couple of days to get down south.
I can't put the big kilometre days in at the moment due to my health problems.
Have you thought about a first day meeting point and what pub we will be staying at?

Actually, I won't be able to make either of those dates as 28 March is the Local Government elections up here.
The Saturday before (21st) is when they hold the training meeting and I get the materials for my polling booth.
Working at council, state (October 2020) and Federal elections gives me good pocket money to spend on more toys!
Any chance you could make it the first weekend in April?

I missed last year’s, even though I initiated it, because I was running the pre-poll voting centre and then a regular polling for the state election in NSW.

As indicated last week, date is now fixed to Sat 28, Sun 29 March.

This is assuming that there is no immediate fire danger by then. We can only hope, not just for our convenience but especially we'd like to see no more people enduring the dire situation many have had to deal with in recent times.

Here in Goulburn there have been a couple of small fires nearby, but quickly dealt with by the RFS. (Rural Fire Service, local groups of volunteer firefighters with some government support for organisation, training and equipment.) Other states have similar organisations under slightly different names. We in Goulburn, and many other places have only had to deal with a constantly smoky atmosphere. Sadly, my Cooma-based son lost a good friend, killed on his farm half way to the coast.

That brings up the topic of the route. Many places depend on tourism for income, and the fires have made it impossible to visit. I hope we can go somewhere that might give a modest boost to the tourism income for a couple of places that may benefit from our visit.
To be determined.

Bill

Bill, At this stage I am unable to commit. I've bitten the bullet and have organised to see Mack the Knife to get my RHS ankle operated on. It has been giving me a lot of grief lately, been getting worse and worse (can hardly walk, let alone long distance ride...)

Am seeing him tomorrow with X-rays etc. I don't know how soon he can get me on the slab for the chop, but I daresay that it would be before the end of March. If so, I will be out of action for at least 6 months.

But, if he can't do it until after, I will most likely go for the jolly down south.

Rickmeister.

Hey Rickmeister, silver lining time - at least its your right leg, if I recall correctly from trying to keep up with you, it’s not like you use that foot much on the rear brake pedal anyway. If it was your gear changing leg, that would be whole lot more serious!

lol!

Seriously though, hope the quack gets it sorted for you and you’re up and riding again soon.

Subject to approval and confirmation, the thought is to stay at Jindabyne Friday and Saturday nights. The caravan park has cabins and camping space on the lake shore.
My thought is to ride to Eden, then Tathra before returning to Jindabyne.

If we get food and fuel along the way, we can make a small economic contribution to bushfire recovery.

What do people think?

Bill

It appears that this year's Southern Ride may be smaller than past years. (Probably because of our government's ban on gatherings of more than 500 people.  500 good, 501 bad!)
No matter, those who are able to come will hopefully have a good time anyway.
Between Aussie bushfires and coronavirus, its been a crazy time. Me missing out on an enjoyable summer pales into insignificance compared to those losing lives, houses and livelihoods.

In past days where most participants have camped by the lake, I've coordinated adjacent spaces. These days, most are taking the cabin option, and I'm not aware of any campers this year.

Accordingly, if you want to arrange a place to stay, please go to https://www.nrmaparksandresorts.com.au/jindabyne/ which is our base of operations. I'm booked in for Friday 27th and Saturday 28th nights.

If that's not suitable, there are a few pubs, probably airbnb/stayz etc. and another caravan park further away from the town centre.

If you don't already have my mobile number, please PM me. (Not usually a good idea to put email addresses and phone numbers in such a public place.)

Bill

Bill, I'm now confident that I will be along for the trip since both my eye operations are complete as of Monday this week and I had a test drive in the car today.
I'll have a little test ride (about 3 hours) up to Nabiac this weekend on the R80G/S. Just have a little bit of work to do on the K75 indicators in preparation for heading south with my minder, young Tom.

Cheers

So with all the crazy zombie movie shit going on I ' m thinkin probably not gunna make this event, haven't got room for a shotgun on the back of the cafe. Dam I have been trying to catch you guys for a few years now. Has not been a great year for my riding adventures , cancelled several long awaited trips now, not happy Jan. If any of you are going to the OCR this year at Adels Grove Ill be there if it still happens . Cheers AB

Most Aussies will have heard Scotty from Marketing last night, or reports about it today. Lots of enforced closures and limitations, including pubs, restaurants and cafes.

While it doesn't actually prevent riding, it makes the stops in between not nearly so pleasant.

Sadly and reluctantly, I think we need to pull the pin on this one   Sad Sad

Maybe we can re-schedule when times get better, whenever that is, or failing that, next year.

Wishing everyone good health and safety.

Bill

Sad but necessary I'm afraid. Lets have a ride and a laugh later this year.
Keep well fellow Riders of Rohan.

Thanks Bill. Probably a wise decision anyway. Hopefully we'll be able to catch up later this year.
Stay safe everyone.

Yeah Bill I know just how you feel I had to put the skids under the ride due to some upcoming surgery on a problem finger which was scheduled for the Monday following then they cancelled the surgery so I thought I might be able to go and was gonna sneak down but alas it was not to be.
Then both of us have come down with a cold (no it is not Covid 19) so I probably would have had to not go anyhow and we are being doubly careful so as not to spread it around.
Think I'll dig a hole and pull it over the top till September and spring.

I would've gotten wet leaving and coming home, both with 7klm of Robertson which has reverted to it's foggy damp self. Not that I would have complained as I am itching to get on the bike.

Loads of bikes going up and down Mac Pass lately, must be all those newly unemployed cit folk.

Keep safe friends
