HI,
I am in the process of repainting my 86 K100. I took off the RT fairing and putting on a RS fairing.
I have just spent a few hours prepping them and I am completely impressed with all the fine detail's that the designer /artist put into them.
Does anyone know the history behind them. Who carved the first one to make the mold?

Except for the guy who designed the RS mirror pod attachment posts/clips. He should be tied to a post and whipped repeatedly. Shocked

Most auto manufacturers use modelling clay for design prototypes.  The guys who shape the clay are incredible sculptors.  In an earlier age, they would have been patternmakers.

I believe the RS models, among others, were the work of Hans Muth.  No?

Have just read through the article. It would be interesting to have some more tidbits.

I like the pic of the dummy on the RT in the wind tunnel. I wonder if the threads were glued symmetrically into position?

Still, for all the engineering and I believe arrogance (anyone NOT seen Dirty Money: The VW Emissions episode), I can't accept the amount of vibration in the engine ... quelled by rubber dampers! (I know Norton tried the isolastic rubbers). If they were going to spend that amount of money, surely they could've got this right.

Oh, and those bloody mirror mounting clips...part of the reason my bike is naked and not sporting the RS fairing. Then again, COVID 19 isolation, winter coming - might return to it.

Cynic

I have always been curious but are either the RS or RT mirror pods straight off any of the BMW car models?  In a way it would sort of make sense with the amount of commonality across the moto range.

I have always noticed that the radiator grill/fairing is a direct copy of the cars in line with their brand image.

Regarding the RS mirrors.

They're not inexpensive(they're BMW parts, after all) but I have found that replacing the old clips in the mirrors pods GREATLY improves the grip on the fairing.  The original clips that are now over 30 years old, and the strength of the grip isn't what it used to be.

The Bimmer car mirrors I've seen fold back, not fall off like K mirrors.

I seem to have luck, 3 K100 [all 2v] and K1100 and none have vibrations. But one piece of advice, buy a K buy new footrest rubbers. Makes a huge difference to the feet.

Synching TBs is critical to smooth running. (Along with sparks plugs in good shape, no air leaks, etc...)

Just swapping the peg rubbers from side to side (or front and rear on 2V bikes) will get you fresh rubber on the leading edge where your foot rests.

Upgrading to the rubber mounted 4V peg plates also helps. (But it takes a little work and quite a few parts.)

If you want to see if an OEM moto part also fits BMW cars, go to a site like www.realoem.com/bmw and choose the car option rather than motos from the dropdown. Enter the last seven digits of the part number and watch for crossovers. It's common to have this with pressure sensors, switches, globes, roundels, relays & etc. Not many actual 'body' parts are common, however.

Years ago, whilst travelling on my R75 Airhead, the oil pressure switch developed a leak. My left boot stank of oil residue (and petrol) for years. I checked the part number and determined it was the same on the 2002 series. An auto parts shop in the next town had one in a brand name for one fifth of the dealer price.

Presto change-o.

Or at RealOEM you can just click on the part number in the fiche.  For example, the K1100LT map light is the same as the dome light for some BMW cars.  Click on 63311376046 (Part #16) below this diagram and you will see that  it's also used in E30 and Z1 cars.

https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/showparts?id=0536-USA-02_1992_89V2_BMW_K_1100_LT_0526,_0536_&diagId=62_0242#63311376046

Duck I agree with you on swapping the foot peg rubbers around, did that but then found new ones are so much softer that there is no comparison. Gotta be new ones. My RS came wih good rubbers and still got new ones for comfort.

As said too balancing throttle bodies etc must be done.
