Pre-unit British bikes where the engine and the gearbox were completely separate. You had to put a small amount of oil in the primary chaincase (drive case) to lubricate the chain between engine and gearbox (primary chain). Sometimes it was the same grade as the engine oil, other times it was slightly thicker. If it was slightly thicker then the chaincase was self-contained, otherwise the excess oil vented back into the crankcases. Damn covers inevitably leaked because hamfisted owners tightened them into warping.Rickmeister wrote:What is "Drivecase oil"? Is it normal engine oil?
