G'Day,

Looking for a working LHS handle bar control switch. My low beam has shit itself.

Already had one go at dismantling and cleaning - (didn't dismantle completely - too many springs and little bits, but cleaned up as best I could) . Got a few weeks out of it but gone again.

Was going to buy new one and have a proper go at re-furbishing the old one for a spare. Haven't been able to find from usual sources. So going with working used and then fit relay to prolong life. Then I will risk pulling the old one apart fully and if I stuff it I can still ride.

Anyone got one lying around?

In Oz - brissie

Cheers  Mick

If you're going the relay route and your high beam switch(es) still work then get a 5 pin relay (with 87 and 87a pins) that uses the high beam to switch the relay's output between the high beam and the low beam.  Then you won't need to replace the combo switch.

Wire as follows:

85 - Ground
86 - high beam from switch - white wire from left combo switch (relay trigger)
30 - 12V power in
87 - power out to high beam (normally open)
87a - power out to low beam (normally closed)

Edit:

If you want the right hand combo switch to turn the headlight on/off then add another relay:

85 - Ground
86 - Headlight on/off switch - white/yellow wire from right combo switch
30 - 12V power in
87 - 12V out to pin 30 of above relay

Thanks for this Duck. The knowledge and workarounds available on this forum are astounding.

High beam only working with  bottom 'hold down' switch..the upper 'click on' part of the switch isn't working and is stiff.
Didn't see any burn marks when I pulled it apart last time..so worth having another crack at cleaning.

The writing is on the wall though. Can't complain though ..the switch turns 36 years old in a couple of months.

Cheers Mick

So....No patience as usual waiting to source a new switch...so pulled down the old one and found the offender.

Short here on white/tan?...a bit of burn...will attempt a new solder.

Plastic scorched...lug recessed...not making contact

This is the bit I will struggle with I think. Need to build up the lug to make contact..dont think solder will cut it. Off to Altronics to see what they have.

The plastic rocker switch is also just about perished too...So I am still in the market for a new switch unit...My previous efforts at soldering have been uninspiring to say the least...will see how I go.

Had a bit of a win. Re-soldered wire...pulled tang and built up with solder. Filed down even with other contacts, cleaned everything up and re-assembled..Low  beam working...woo hoo!!

Don't know how long it will stand up so still shopping for new switch.

Many thanks to the tribal elders for the previous posts and photos which gave me the confidence to have a crack. I did have springs and clips and contacts flying everywhere....but managed to find them all and with a few guesses and trial and error got it back together.

Cheers

Mick

Beauty, this will give others the confidence to give it a go. Mine didn't work when I got it. Turning it on and off repeatedly, got it going. I thought I'll have to open this up one day, or do the relay trick. Spose I should do both, they're on the "to do" list at the moment.

Good job Gaz,

Exactly the same problem..similar solution, although your repair appears a bit more robust than mine. I was able to pull the tang out, tin it and build up with solder, replace in hole and very quickly drop a blob of solder on the inside of housing on top of the tang...didn't melt the plastic much, then used wifes nail file to take down to the correct height....so far so good.

As mentioned in other post, am looking at a group buy of relay harness (either easternbeaver or make our own) with Matt and whoever else wants in, then a workshop day for SEQ Krew to fit. Also contacting Komandoaliante to see if he has hi/lo beam plastic ?button? available/

Again, thanks for sharing the knowledge...love this forum.

Have fun in NZ...look forward to reading the ride reports.
