Well...that was a hoot!!
4 days of good riding, banter and bullshit, with a hell of a lot of laughs.
Bit of a summary below...my memory is not the best so I trust the other participants will be able to add/emend/embellish the facts to better match reality. A few photo's included, but I know there are more and better out there.
Day 1 - Brisbane to Monto
Met up north of Brisbane in the middle of a fog. 5 K's - Matt - SE , Martin 75S, Paul LT, Dan standard K and moi RS. Also a 'tag along' GS piloted by Ralph. Headed NW up the Daigular Hwy. Can't remember exactly where Dan and Ralph turned for home but somewhere betwen Nanango and Goomeri...I think. Stopped at the 'Big Bucket'...lots of 'Big' things in QLD. Along the way we passed 'Big' peanuts, orange, mandarin, bucket, bunyip..thinking of arranging a 'Big' tour, but I digress. After a few side trips to Historic 'upside down' bridge..and a dam...a bit of dirt too as I recall, we pulled into Monto late afternoon and set up camp in our cabin.
Went for stroll through downtown Monto and dined at the local Rissole (RSL - Returned Services League). Another stroll home with Paul showing his Bear Grylls skills traversing a canyon and mounting a 'big' cow...someones got a photo. A fairly early night.
Day 2 Monto to 1770 via Biloela
Saw a few local sites on the way up the highway...another dam I think and made our way to Biloela for lunch. Visited the tourist info booth and decided to do a loop entitled 'Biloela Beauties' which included a dam, multiple coal fired power stations, a pile of coal, an explosion monitoring hut which had been re-branded as a 'scenic lookout' another dam, and a plaque on a rock denoting the site of a 'historic hotel'...I think the local tourist and progress assoc were struggling to fill the guide booklet...Good ride anyway...bit more dirt I think.
Had to do an emergency stop when a small child that turned into a cat and then a leaf ran out from the side as I was pulling in...full lock front brakes and rotated my handlebars in the risers...vision as well as memory going..no harm done.
Rolled into 1770 late in the day, quick walk to the beach for a dip and dined at the local takeaway. The 2 double bunks had Paul having flashbacks to his Navy days and the boys adopted appropriate security precautions.
Day 3 1770 - Hervey Bay
Started the day with a visit to the site where Capt Cook beached the Endeavour to repair a hole in the hull caused by hitting a reef. Great days riding, where the old K's stood up and made us proud - kept the revs up and went all day.
Again side trips to local sites.....another dam I think...this one was broken..damn..also some more dirt as I recall.
Nearly had a punch up with some entitled caravanners at the 'drivethru' historic tunnel through the rock..saw 2 bats..and a dam I think. Ably led by Paul into town using some local knowledge to our digs.
Martin copped a busted indicator lens and headlight protector - probably from insects on the bitumen...wouldn't have been the dirt
Dinner at the local pub was 'big'. We hit the recreation room and dazzled the grey nomads with our pool and table tennis skills, then hit the hay early again.
Day 4 Hervey Bay to Brisbane
Took the long way rather than fight our way down the highway...Maryborough, Tin Can Bay, Gympie (lost Matt here -he made it home) Kenilworth, Maleny, Landsborough and home.
Great fun, some bloody good (and fast) riding, and heaps of laughs. Many thanks to Martin for planning the route, Matt for leading us to all the side trips and sights, and everyone else for the company and 'espirit de corps'.
Hopefully the others will add some 'filler' to this along with some more photos.
On to the next!
