Just swapped over a MPH speedo for a KPH speedo. The low fuel lights are not working as I believe this newly installed speedo is off a later bike. However sorting the wires is not my forte. Has anyone installed a separate gauge as I feel more comfortable when riding long distances in the SA country and not just using the trip meter as a gauge, any advice will be welcome, Brian . [I'm prepared to have a shot with the wiring if someone out there has done it and can advise]

brian if its an early series tank ...with the fuel pump and level sensor connector near the front left hand side  , support electronics inside the instruments are required ....the old system uses a 2 level sensor  for 7 and 4 litres left , but the new series gauges use a feed from the rear mounted tank connector  to integrate a low level switch , supposed to be for 4 litres left , and an analogue wiper (90 ohms ) which would feed a conventional stand alone fuel gauge

you could transfer the electronics board internal from the old instruments  to the new instruments ....but is a hell of a job to get it all correct , if inexperienced .

that's the short answer


but I don't see why some clever soul could develop an external level trigger device as an add on for a couple of leds to indicate the low level status of 7 and 4 litres coming out of the old tank connector .


the alternative and probably preferred method  would be to get a later series tank with all the gear inside already , extending the cable to the tank rear connector would not be too hard to accomplish  , and an additional gauge for fuel level could than be added to the dash - fairing - somewhere

But to put a later series tank on you will need some means of holding it in place. Early ones are bolted down at the rear, under the seat. Later ones have two pins on the underside and the early frame has not receivers for these pins. I have no ideas on the loom connections for the gauge to actually work.

Really short answer: For 85 and earlier, no.

Use the trip odometer and start looking for gas at 150 miles.
