Hi all,
I'm a retired mech + elec eng, run 4 BMs, all from basket cases, make my own parts ( within reason ), make tools when needed for certain jobs. I've probably done > 300 000 kms on 2 wheels in my lifetime and still make mistakes.
1978 R100S, 250 000 kms ; 1983 K100RS, 300 000 kms ; a 1981 R100"ZSGS" ( Zwei Stoßdämpfer Gelände Straße ), a "clone" with a Werner Reinschlüssel 40L tank, R65 gussetted frame using HPN as a guideline, RS engine, lots of other stuff, done 200 000 kms, been to Kilimanjaro ( not me, long ago owner ) ; a 1979 R100S Exclusive Sport with 140 000 kms, gussetted frame similar to above, to copy Reg Pridmore bikes. Handles very differently to 1978 but still not as good as K.
Any inspection by BM diehards generally have them shaking their heads in disgust. I believe in modifying anything internal to a bike ( if it's for the better ) but try to keep the external appearance original. Example : that horrible starter relay under the tank on 90Ss, I'd put in a modern one.
Most things I make, I make a drawing of ( in AutoCAD ) for future reference.
I'm attaching my description of my K gearbox drain modification because this makes that really messy job MUCH easier, but it doesn't make much sense without the pics, so how do I attach pics ?
