I expect Bert will know but I'll put it out there anyway

I was thinking of getting some hall sensors to hold in stock for when mine fail or start to play up
The Honeywell 2AV54 item Bert lists is not easily available in the UK and has to be
ordered from the States Via Farnell.
However, there is a german company that sells a direct equivalent for
10 euros singly
8.75 for 5 to 9 and
7.50 for 10+ ( thats £6.28 in real money BTW)
its the CYHME56 from here
http://www.hallsensors.de/Hall-Vane.htm

Does the 75 use the same sensors?
If so, apart from guys I know with 100's, theres a few guys with 75's I thought I'd bring in to share postage and keep the cost down.
5 bikes will mean 15 euros a pair plus P&P which I hope will be reasonable as its cheaper to get mail from Euroland than send to, thanks to the robbing so and so's at the Royal mail
(22.5 urals for a 75 as they use 3 and IF they are the same)

Anyone in the UK interested in getting some post here or mail me
I've just mailed CY-sensors for prices and postage to the UK

You are right that it becomes very difficult to find the 2AV54

The 2AV54 and CYHME56 have almost the same characteristics and either of them will work on the K100 or K75.
I will correct your mistake: The K75 uses only 2 sensors. They are just mounted at a different position.

Only two for the 75 eh?
Thanks Bert I knew you'd know
Why did I ithink there were three, maybe confusing them with coils?
Anyway
Thats good news it means the 75 is as cheap to refurb as the 100.
and at £18 a pair a hell of a lot cheaper than the £280 odd for a new assembly

I heard back from CY-senors and they'll send me 10 for 75 euros
plus 15 euros for UPS freight and with the damned VAT at 19% it would come to
107.10 euros ( £89.66)

Just tell them that we will advertise their product on our site if they give you a better price. Nothing to lose! Other people may need them. In the US, it's still possible to get the original 2AV54 but maybe not for long.

Hi Inge, great advise, had a quick look, but (gulp) then noted the price at US$50 each! I have family in Aussie that could post, so with their prices it seems the better option (for the moment :-)), but I'll look further here.

Need to repair one which failed during my holiday trip last year in Germany!

Thanks, Rene

I was looking last month for Hall Effect Vane Sensors to have as ready spares should the need arise.

That USA supplier, BBAutomacao.com, is adding a hefty mark-up to those Hall Effect Vane Sensors.

I believe the manufacturer is Chen Yang Technologies GmbH & Co. KG in Finsing, Germany.

Their website is: http://www.chenyang.de/

There are two versions of this sensor; the CYHME56 & the CYHME56C. The CYHME56C is advertised as having better resistance to magnetic interference.

I contacted the manufacturer for a recommendation and price quote, and they recommended the CYHME56C for the 1985 BMW K100RS ignition system. They quoted a price for four sensors at EUR12.50/sensor plus EUR12.00 freight fee to my address in Virginia, USA. That's EUR62.00 total for four sensors delivered which is about $21.25 US Dollars per sensor. BBAutomacoa.com wanted about $65.00 for one sensor shipped.

As indicated by the OP, I think the CYHME56 will work and it's only EUR10.00/sensor. Chen Yang offers discounts for multiples.

1 to 4 Pieces (CYHME56/CYHME56C Euros): 10.00/12.50
5 to 9 Pieces: 8.75/10.95
10 Pieces: 7.50/9.40

Assuming the CYHME56 & CYHME56C are as good as advertised, I think they're the only economically feasible solution to the OEM Hall Effect Vane Sensor, Honeywell 2AV54, shortage.

Regards

When I do search for the part numbers, it appears the seller is Jaycar Electronics out of Oz. I don't see a spec sheet to compare with original spec.

Whatever the case, Chen Yang out of Germany is still a better bargain for USA customers.

The sensors in Klompy's bag looks like the model CYHME 301 which is a replacement for a Siemens sensor(s).
Different mounting....holes instead of pins....otherwise close to identical dimensions.

Have read in other forums (way back) that some have used the Siemens sensor w/o any problem.

If you have no preference for type of mounting, it appears the CYHME301 is virtually identical in regards to specs to the CYHME56/CYHME56C. The only difference I see are some very minor differences in dimensions.

Per the Chen Yang Technologies website, the CYHME301 sells for: 1 to 4 parts 9.00 Euros, 5 to 9 parts 7.90 Euros and, 10 parts 6.75 Euros.

I don't know which is the best mounting type for the K100 application, because I haven't had to do this fix yet.

Does anyone recommend a particular type mounting preference for the K100?

Well then, if mounting pins are the deciding criteria, then I think the best solution is the CYHME56 or the CYHME56C. The Chen Yang website indicates the CYHME56C has superior resistance to magnetic interference, but I don't see anything on the spec sheets that support such a claim. The CYHME56 is the lower cost option of the preferred mounting. From what I've read, I think any of the three options from Chen Yang Technologies would function properly in a K100 application.

I'd buy two sets of the CYHME56 and I think I'd have a lifetime supply of Hall Effect Vane Sensors for my K100.

Regards

[*]Honeywell discontinued making the model HES used in the K's and R1100-1150's.  There is a Chinese replacement available.  It appears the issue isn't with the unit, rather it is the wiring that fails and some insulated shielding may result in longer life of the unit.  Temperature appears to be the killer in the sense that the operating temperature must be near the upper limits of the temp range.

Good Info for DIY rebuild of the HES

I found a gentleman who used to rebuild the Hall Sensor Plates for R1100's  Uses the same unit as the K's
Source for HES:  Tom Wade

He currently NOT repairing the HES.

However, he says he still has a limited number of wire sets available, and a large number of the HES transistor sets.  (60+)

He's got the best price for USA customers.

I'm not sure who's sensor he has at this time.  Key issue with HES failure apparently is the wires fail rather than the sensor itself.

According to a R bike site Google directed me to, R1100's have HES failures as a common occurrence.  Seems the wires used on all of the applicable HES units doesn't hold up to heat all that well.

Is it the wire that runs from the ignition control unit to the Hall Effect Vane Sensor leads? Where is the junction at each end of the shielded silver Teflon wire that resolves the heat deterioration issue? What gauge wire is required?

I haven't had any issues which indicates to me that trouble is on the horizon considering the age of my bike.

As I have understand it the problem with shorted wires have been close to the clamps at the sensor plate.

The HES units on most K bikes last a very, very long time.  We have less issues how the HES is secured and not a big problem with pinched wiring along with less heat and vibration than the R bikes.   If you can pick-up a bad unit, and get a good deal on the sensors it might be a better alternative.  You'd have a plate ready to go if or when yours fails

I thought I might grab myself a couple of hall effect sensors as a backup spare set. I rely on my ride nearly every day so I need to be able to have a quick turn-around if I need to repair.

TWB's post a short while ago is a very good option if you want a complete replacement HES unit, but, to have a AU$160 part hanging around in the bottom drawer just in case is still a bit pricey for me.

The replacement CYHME56 sensors from ChenYang Technologies at AU$17 each (AU$34 a set) is a very cost effective backup imo. For a qty of 10 (5 sets) the price comes down to AU$13 each (AU$26 a set). These prices do not include freight. These seem to be the cheapest you can get.
AFAIK these are also suitable for a K75 but do your own homework on that.

Fitting them looks to be reasonably simple. See Inge's link a little further back up the thread.

If there are any other Ozzies that would like to combine an order to get a slightly cheaper price and share the freight, then let me know. I'll probably place an order around the first week in June.
I get down to Newcastle and Sydney on a regular basis and getting any up to Brissie from here would be no problem.

Cheers

So Jaycar have the sensors (musta bin dreanin') but they were apparently discontinued a while back. However, as Inge pointed out in his post further back the Jaycar sensors are HKZ-101 (CYHME301).
The originals being 2AV54 (CYHME56).
Electrical specs and the mounting holes are the same but there is a minute difference in the vane gap which brings it close to tolerance.
You can check out the dimensions here but not a huge amount of difference. If others have used these successfully then I guess they'll do the job when needed.

They're still cheaper from ChenYang Co who are the manufacturers in de. I'd already emailed them for freight charges so will be interesting to see how that works out.

im a user of the jaycar hall effects

worked out well for me

as well as being available on demand

the price that you list is a goodun nigel

I would suggest that this would be a good investment for many of us out here

the hardest thing is drilling accurately through the steel rivets in the original items  ....keep in mind that the clearance hole was 3.5 mm to fit them up through the backing plate
perhaps a run through with a 2.8 mm first then a clearance 3.5 hole would be an advantage ?

...seems like cheap insurance!  Put me down for a set too.  Thanks.
These are small items.  I'm guessing posting them to the US would not be impractical.  Do correct me if I'm wrong.  Embarassed
