Hi to all the electrical experts.

I am going to take le K down country for the weekend. There is a flashing red warning light. As far as I understand it is the bulb monitoring unit. Both switches work, contacts are clean and the bulb works and is brand new.

When I turn on the ignition the light comes on not flashing and then when I activate the front and back brakes it starts to flash. Not a serious issue as everything seems to be working except for the annoying red warning light

Any thoughts on how to troubleshoot this?

Cheers

You write the bulb works but on my US K75, the bulb monitor is checking two bulbs—the brake lamp and the tail lamp.

You had rewired your moto after a fire. You seemed to make good progress until this.

When my moto's ignition switch is turned to On, the red triangle stays lit until both the front brake lever and the rear brake pedal have been depressed to activate the brake lamp. If the brake lamp and brake switches are ok, the triangle light will be extinguished. If the tail lamp isn't operating, the light will stay on.

You were riding back in April. Was there a warning light shutoff sequence to deploy back then, or nothing?

Can you refresh us as to the year and model you have?  Laitch mentions that you have rewired it.  Do you have ABS?  An ABS fault will make the light flash.

it is a 1992 VIN ends 0251548 - at the moment i have the ABS relay removed to stop that light from flashing (i know)

I have been riding the bike most weekends with the intention of stripping the bike over the winter months to get it resprayed - it just seems to be a weird fault.

I have checked it a few times - once the light did go out and stay out but now it seems to go through the check that you describe (on solid until front and back brake are pressed then go out) but instead of going out it simply flashes?

currently on the to-do list
 - reconnect ABS
 - reconnect heated grips
 - reconnect hazard lights
 - front seals (will get this done professionally)
 - new screen
 - get tank welded
 - refurb speedo lights

oh and actually riding it Smile

Go to the Profile tab, click the Signature tab then put the model and its date of manufacture in your signature. It will then show up along with every post you make as a reference. You might notice many of us have done that.

I would check the condition of the relays, they are expendable and the most likely part to fail.

If it does turn out to be an ABS relay, I can send one or two down with Ringfad. Not that he knows, just yet!

Well... buggerrit. I'm in Kilkenny next weekend; just to show my age, I'm going to see Bob Dylan and Neil Young. If it's not too much trouble Simon, could you leave it in the woodstore behind the bag of coal? If Ed does diagnose his problem as being a relay before next Saturday, I'll leave a couple of relays on top of said bag of coal.

Lots of talk about faulty ABS relay...but have you actually checked and reset the ABS brain?

The solid light that flashes once both brake levers are operated shows that it is not the BMU or bulbs and the fault lies with the ABS. Normally, the light will flash until you ride off and exceed 2.5mph at which point the ABS brain checks that the input from the front and back wheels are the same (i.e. both wheels turning at same speed) and then activates itself...and the light goes out. However, if you have a fault code in the ABS brain, then it doesn't activate and the light keeps flashing (you can stop the flashing by pressing the ABS switch on the dash pad which gives a solid light for the next 10  minutes and then starts flashing again). This is not a huge problem, you still have both brakes operational but you don't have the benefit of ABS.

There are several reasons for the fault code and you need to connect an ABS tester to the blue socket on the right hand side frame (above the coolant expansion bottle). That will tell you what the fault is. You then need to fix the fault and reset the brain. One of the faults is the ABS relay, so changing the relay and reseting the brain may cure your problem...but there are other faults too (low voltage, sensor error etc.) and you often have to do several resets to clear all the faults that have been stored.

+1  This is excellent advice.  I just reread the thread and noticed that as soon as it was mentioned that the bike in question was a 1992 with ABS everyone started talking about relays but not doing an ABS fault readout and reset.

I know from personal experience that a weak battery can trigger an easily reset ABS fault once the battery has been recharged.

Probably... Very Happy Saw Roger Waters, John Fogerty and Steve Millar recently too. All in the same age bracket, although you wouldn't know it the way John Fogerty hit the stage and never stopped for a good two hours. Got tickets for Rick Wakeman in December too.

You know you're getting old when you go to see your musical heroes at a casino or county fair.  Another sign is that their contract rider specifies that a cardiac specialist and a defibrillator be onstage through the sound check and the full concert.  An ambulance parked near by is often required as well.

Apologies - I posted this then went away for the weekend, followed by a few days off with a pulled back :/

i was reading through all the suggestions and i think i am slightly more confused than before?

The red warning light i am getting is the one in the center of the cluster, not the ABS warning light.

Does the ABS have to be working for the BMU to function?. The ABS is a battle for another day.

Once you hit both brakes to get rid of the solid BMU light it will then flash with the ABS warning light until the ABS successfully initializes.

Hmmm i wonder is it as simple as the plug is not connected correctly on the ABS brain. i did disconnect it to get at the bulbs to check them (my ABS unit is in the tail) - investigations to contiune
