Hi

I purchased a timing light from cash converters in Australia and I’m not certain if I can use it to set the timing on my Bmw k100.
The unit does not have an advance timing adjuster, just the light unit, the unit which attaches to the number 1 spark plug lead and the positive and negative cords.
Any suggestions.

There's really no need to use a timing light on a K.

I tried it years ago on a couple of Ks and discovered two things:

1) Unless you take the front wheel off it's very hard to get a good view in the Hall Effect Sensor area.

2) Lining up the notch on the side of the HES with the notch where it mounts sets the timing correctly.

Using a timing light is about as useful as tits on a frog. To get it any more accurate than lining up the notch you need a special dial gauge.
If you set the timing by the marks you would see it will run like crap because those marks are TDC marks and not base idle marks.

You are right.
The timing light on a bmw k100 is about as useful as “tits on a bull” 
It was only $20.
Oh well, lesson learnt.
I tried turning the Hall effect transmitter clockwise.
I noticed a small increase in engine revs. Not much else.
All advice is appreciated.

When I got my first K I spent a lot of time reading stuff posted on the interweb.  One of the things I saw was an article about advancing the timing something like 4-6 degrees.  There were articles about calculating what distance to rotate the plate and how it improved mid-range throttle response or something. 

I just set mine like the photo above.  As Duck mentioned, you can't see the timing marks unless the front wheel is removed, and with my old light, I would have had to remove the forks as well.

Which are under discussion here—bullfrog or bull tits? I think either would have commercial potential on the Dark Web so they shouldn't be dismissed entirely.

If, someday, the engine is turns over but doesn't start, there's still the possibility that the light's inductive clamp could be attached around a plug wire and the light used to determine whether there is current going to the spark plug so the investment isn't a total loss. Who knows? Someday you might own a VW Microbus from the Sixties.

Have you done it engine turning?

As there is no high voltage at that level, it is safe to turn that platform by hand whilst the engine is turning, in order to find the highest idle rpm. That highest rpm indicates that the computer program answers at its best based on the informations it avails.
