Being prehistoric I've had thoughts of moving into the new age and trying to see if I could make good use of a GPS unit. Since I have no knowledge of "root files" and such and do not think I can down load "apps" on my flip phone do you think I would be better off just spending 4 or 5 hundred bucks on a moto unit?

I've had more bad experiences with GPS than good. What I would like to do is set up routes for the next day or week or whatever and give my old eyes a brake from trying to spot road signs or read maps in my tank bag as I go down the road.

I'm sure someone you know could do it for you/help you with it. It's not really technical and you wouldn't be risking many $$$.

When you set up major turns and destinations it makes life much easier when the GPS tells you when the turn is coming up.

Edit to add: Heck, I could do it for you.  It only costs $8 to priority mail one across the country.

Caveman, You can do like this flip phone user and get a Garmin Nuvi 40LM with North American maps of the the Great Satan, Mehecho, and the Great White North and free lifetime map upgrades on eBay for about $40-50 which is less than what a map update costs.

I mounted mine to the crossbar behind the windshield on my K75RT and hard-wired the power cable to the relay box.

With the standard swivel ball mount, I no longer try to waterproof mine to protect the touch screen.  Rather I carry a couple Zip-Loc sandwich bags in my tank bag and slip one over the Nuvi and pop it back into the mount when it looks like rain.  I can still read the screen and the touch function still works.

I have a TomTom XL IQ Routes available, free to a good home.

Ireland , UK preferable as postage any further would be more than it is worth.

Has latest available Austria, Belgium, France, Germany, Ireland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Monaco, Netherlands, Switzerland and United Kingdom maps.
