Upgrading my recent back from the dead K75 to a 50A alternator.

Getting the three alternator bolts to turn the first few degrees is always a major PITA, especially the bottom inside one.  Even though I removed the coils and starter to get at it, heated it with a torch and hit it with penetrating oil, I was having trouble getting an Allen wrench well-seated with a good angle to get my cheater bar on it and it simply would not budge.

Irwin Bolt Grip to the rescue!  I used an 3/8" extension on the 13mm one and pounded it onto the bolt head with a hammer.  Then it loosened up easy peasy with a hinged socket wrench and my 1" square aluminum cheater bar. After that I just spun it out with the extension.

Next time I may just do this first and not bother removing the coils and starter.

Each time I'm busy with the same task (a reluctant bolt), and I've used the blowlamp and penetrant, my mate peers over my shoulder and reminds me to belt the head with a hammer a few times before trying to loosen it. This almost always makes the difference.

He's been retired years from a life as an underground fitter, he knows what's what, he's a huge counterpoint to my cerebral 'know-all' approach. I'd be lost without him.

Yeah, another train of thought I had was to come up with a way to use an impact driver on it but it's in an awkward location for that.

Opposed thumb and fingers are overrated. What we got is mechanical advantage.

Using the wrong tool correctly,...

I had a stripped upper triple clamp allen bolt giving me the bird.

I used a 1/2 inch or 12mm ring spanner and bashed it onto the bolt in preparation for welding them together and removal.

However the impact and bite of the ring spanner was enough to coax it out.

Everything is so logical with hindsight

Must admit, I’m a big fan of those Irwin bolt/stud extractors. Just successfully removed both lower triple clamp Allen bolts with mine. Couldn’t budge them with Allen key/hex socket as heads were rounding out. No room to wield a FBH (without removing all the fairing) and really didn’t want to apply heat as there is too much wiring in the vicinity and it is rather close to the fuel tank...No room to get molegrips (visegrips) in and firmly clamped on. So, got Irwin sockets out, chose one just slightly smaller than Allen bolt head, lined it up and tapped home with side of small hammer. Wrench on socket from underneath and, hey presto, out came both bolts, easy as. Just finished refitting forks (seals replaced) with shiny new Allen bolts (suitably greased up). Potential nightmare averted - all done with just the glove boxes removed on a fully faired LT.
