Had my fairings of for a long time, tried to put it all back yesterday and had this rubber piece left over. Anybody know where it goes?

You'd need to include an image or perhaps a pencil sketch. It also helps that we know what your bike year/model is. I suggest placing it in your signature like most members do.

I did attach 3 pics of the part, obviously did not work. I clicked on the camera image with the plus sign, watched as it uploaded the pics, then pressed send. I used an iPhone to do this, will try my PC later on.

Bike is a 1984 K100RT

I think it goes between the steering head and the front of the tank.  None of my bikes has it, but they are of later vintage.  I think it's purpose is to control the airflow around the steering head and protect the wiring from chafe.  BMW calls it a gasket part number 46 63 1 453 740 and it's no longer available.

Thanks. I already put my left fairing on without it but I’ll take it off and have a look. Do your diagrams only show it for left side? I only have one, so I guess it doesn’t go on the right side as well?

I’m wondering if it goes underneath the fairing, or do you attach the fairing first and it goes on top (under the storage box?). The diagram doesn’t help with fitment location

The parts fiche says it is the "gasket, right".  Since I never had a bike with it I can't say how it's installed.  Maybe someone else can help, or maybe you can just leave it out.  I think most owners have tossed it.

Goes on the rightside, on the bracket just on top of the engine, the hole will cover the bolt on the bracket.

No, fairing has to stay in place.
Remove (if it's there) the long black panel where your knees are, shove the rubber over the bracket flat side up.

And there's me thinking that the one I've got needs to make the acquaintanceship of the nearest of the two rubbish bins in my garage. No excuse not to put it back on now

It's part of the isolation of the heat from the radiator.....

Haven't got a bike available for that, besiders, it's 23:10 here......

Short version is, when you have the panel on the bike, with that bracket bolted on the engine, then just put that rubber over the bracket.
The hole you see is bolted on top of the engine;
