Hi Olaf

Thanks for starting this - at the the moment the 9th and 16th are good for me, 23rd might be out.

Note:- We can't go here anymore, as they keep falling down !

I enjoyed the trip last year down your way, so maybe you can think of somewhere else in Wexford / Waterford/ Cork.

A few thoughts....

Mother Hubbards at Cashel, its good for an outing via Slieve Blooms Birr etc or southerly via Lismore etc

Mother Hubbards at Clarinbridge........its good for a foray into the Burren.

Kilmartins at Athlone and a route around Lough Ree.

Open to more ideas, I [and quite a few of us] have been in these ones and good for food.

Anyone for more ideas...?

All three dates work for me at the moment (fingers crossed no more relatives fall off the perch  Surprised  ).

It might be a bit of  a spin for some, but the Beara peninsula, going over Caha pass and back over Healy pass is spectacular if the weather is good.  Silvermines is also pretty good.

But I'd go anywhere at the moment.

We did do that last time so a very good idea....I don't do the PhotoRally, I use the bike for work and do a lot of miles anyway, 24,000 in 2018.

I'm happy to do the route planning.

Can we do a poll on preferred meeting mount and route?

Suggestions:

  1. Cashel/Silvermines
  2. Kilkenny/Cahir/The Vee/Dungarvan
  3. Beara Peninsula
  4. Dunbrody/Hook/Passage East/Donmore East
  5. Castlebellingham/Carlingford/Cooley Peninsula

Please indicate your first and second preference.

My choices are made with this quote in mind;"The world is a book and those who do not travel read only one page."These two routes I haven't run before.

First choice: Cashel/Silvermines.
Second choice : Castlebellingham/Carlingford/Cooley Peninsula.

The Beara Peninsula is another great spin.

looking forward to the spin.

All but Beara suit me.

If we do number 5 we might get the elusive Dai to join us.

1st choice would be slivermines

Any of the others suit, depending on weather etc. I don't fancy going up north if it is bucketing down, but closer to the day could make a weekend of it.

So take it I'll go with the majority.

Chris; if they settle on 5 then yes, I will be able to make it. From the previous posts you've probably twigged that my problem is my shift hours. Most of my work is based in the good ol' US of A, so I work 15.30-00.00 UTC and get home about 00.45. Olaf's suggestion of the Cooley means that I can still sleep while they're getting up here. It's about an hour from me to Carlingford etc..

I am planning a camping trip for the weekend of 15-18 March. Likely to be at www.norevalleypark.com but I can be tempted to go elsewhere....

Chris, lots of choices, nore valley park is about 90 minutes from Dublin ferry port down the M1/M50/M7/M9 and its only about 4 miles off Junction 9/M9.

If you come to Belfast I am open to other places/options.

If the ride were to be the Cooley peninsula, then I would ferry to Dublin the day before and have 2 nights in Dundalk or Drogheda. Never visited the area before though, so they are only places I've chosen from the map.

Only previously visited Ireland for the NW200; sailed to Dublin and stopped just outside Derry. Will be over for the Rory fest this year though.

Can you just put my mind at rest: it doesn't rain in Ireland in March does it?

Cheers

No idea Chris......when there's a cloud we go sup Guinness, eat pudding or whatever.

I only rains twice a week here, first for four days and then for three days.

On a more serious note the eastern side is much drier and we do tend to look at the weather map before finalising the route. Comberjohn in our resident weather man,

Ok here's a proposed run: about 150 kms plus time to meet/breakout points. (2.5 - 3 hrs riding with stops for photos, smokos etc)

Cooley Route

Meet at Motherhubbards on the R148  (between Kinnegad and Enfield on the old Dublin/Galway Road)
to depart 11.00 am

Feel free to join in at Castlebellingham services/Navan/Slane etc as suits.

terminate group Run in Newry - Some will be heading back North. Some South to Dublin etc.

Make yizzer own arrangements for riding home in groups.

all in favor say Aye!  Worship

So if a European cousin (me, for the time being at least) fancied a trip over, probs via Holyhead, whereabouts are the interestin places to stop on Friday and Saturday eve?
Ferry arrives Dublin 17:15 & leaves 14:50.
cheers

Edit.
Trim looks okay (on the route) - will I be able to stay out of trouble there? Is it a Guinness free zone?

Will: slight modification - turn off at The Bush onto the Rath Abbey road. That takes you up on top of the Cooley and along the middle of it. There's some good views from up there. You can either drop back down at the Long Woman's Grave or bear left there and loop round down to Omeath. It's a narrow road but last time I was up there, the surface was good. You do not want to go on to the Black Mountain and drop down to Ravensdale; you can see Dublin from the top on a good day but the road is seriously buttock-clenching. I've ridden some nasty ones in India and this stretch runs them a very, very close second.

Trim looks okay (on the route) - will I be able to stay out of trouble there? Is it a Guinness free zone?

Trim is a great place to stay, Trim castle was used in Braveheart so plenty to do.

"You do not want to go on to the Black Mountain and drop down to Ravensdale....."

Honestly, who says something like that?
My mother once said 'You Do Not!' and then something about sticking metal objects into plug sockets - she actually specified metal knitting needles as a particularly bad example (why on earth would you plant that idea?)

Most of my electrical knowledge awareness was self taught. It takes a lot of persistence, and figuring out how the little guard thingy inside the socket works, in order to electrocute yourself successfully.

This is why you turn right instead of going straight on... That strip of asphalt is just wide enough to fit a Landrover on and is extremely deceptive in this picture. It's full of lurking potholes and gravel traps looking to destroy your wheels at the first opportunity and that dropoff is a lot steeper than it looks. At least in India the roads were a bit wider than this!

That looks like a highway compared to our lane. We have potholes, subsidence into open drains and grass up the middle to makes sure you dice with the former. Luckily LT/RT's can be ridden like a GS!!

We can make those mods to the route Dai. Hope you'll make it.

@ Chris846. Trim is nice and the castle worth a look

Stay anywhere in the Enfield, Kinnegad, Trim triangle and you're close to the meeting point. Harry's in Kinnegad is only an hour from the port, good food rooms and bar. I'd happily hook up with you there on the way through. B&Bs may be cheaper but I have no recommendations there.

I'm thinking I should be able to catch up with you at Castle Bellingham. The market place is big enough to see anyone parked there waiting.

And that was just about an hour of my life I won't get back - why don't Irish Ferries just say 'hey, we intend to stiff anyone travelling over for St Patrick's weekend' - instead of using a bewildering and meaningless 'Ooops, integrity problem with your booking' message when you try to book a return journey deal?

I must've 'booked' two dozen journey/time combos before I worked out that there is availability on all sailings, but you just can't book a Friday/Sunday combo this particular weekend. They allow you to book two singles - at inflated prices, instead. 'Integrity problem' huh? You should know....

Rant over, 'pologies.

That's great Edmund. There'll be plenty of stops to break it up. When I first got on my k I was tipping around locally. Someone said that soon wouldn't be enough for me, how right they were!!

If you're coming up this way on the 16th, I might join you.
Last St Pat's day run I was on was up the Boyne Valley. 1C on the way down and snow on the way back up! Was a nice day otherwise, though.

Trust the K-force Edmund!  When I bought my K the seller (a devoted Iron Butt R man) said "I'd hop on this thing right now and ride it to California.".  How right he was and the bike is in much better nick now than when I brought it home.  And hey, you'd be riding with more technological expertise (and likely spare parts too) than when our bikes were new.

Enjoy your meet up!

Hopefully - I was fitting a new radiator last night, noted a blister of paint on the bottom of the tank which i thought was rust. Turns out it was a hole in the tank and the blister was filled with petrol (the paint had been sealing the tank) so off to a welders tomorrow to see if it can be repaired :/.

Thats the plan - tomorrow, pull the tank, remove all the parts from inside the tank and have a very careful look at it. It does look like the mounting hole for the radiator shroud was stressed on the left hand side which caused a tiny crack.

@Dai - thanks for the link. Is this stuff any good? there are a number of small holes in the tank i have discovered so it is not economical to repair. Sherlocks and Motorworks seem to be approx €150-€200 for a  second hand tank.

Cheers

Ed
