Morning all,

Bike 1985 K100RT 57k miles

Last week the engine shut down at 60 mph with no prior warning.  I was able to re-start after a few minutes but the temp gauge rose to 3/4 and the fan cut in. It has re-started several times since and run stationary at tickover until properly warmed up without issue.

I have plenty of oil - oil and filter changed 800 miles ago. Coolant is circulating, thermostat is operating, fan cuts in where it should.

Compression test with WOT showed around 100 psi on all 4.

I've taken the valve cover off and there is no obvious physical damage. I've measured valve clearances and found:

All exhaust are .25 - .30 tick v.g.

Inlets:

.15 .10+ .10+ .10+

(my gauges only have .05 increment so 2 thru 4 are an easy .10 but won't take .15).

To narrow it down the 3 suspect inlets are a nice sliding fit for .005 in.

Three questions:

Do these clearances make any sense at all? What I've read says tightening exhaust pretty common, inlet: pretty rare.

If they do make sense, as opposed to me just not knowing what I'm doing, is this likely to have caused the stop and overheat (even though it re-started fine after just a few moments)?

If I have measured correctly, is this a don't ride it til fixed scenario?

I have already had a lot of much needed support on this under a different thread for which I am grateful. However, the bike I normally work on is a 1954 Enfield Bullet, so absolutely not too proud to receive more input.

Thanks, Stu.

Cheers Moriati,
Ordered a used one from motorworks yesterday  Very Happy hoping that will do the trick. Now just gearing myself up mentally for the shim challenge, although hoping someone can give some pointers on why they might be as they are as it seems a bit unusual.
Bike is being prepped for the Dragon, 11 days to go, 4 days til parts arrive, 66 years too late learning about this cr..

Mechanic's tune up...tight inlets and loose exhausts. Tight exhausts would be a worry but yours are fine. I would carry on to the Dragon!!

Thanks Olaf, You’ve given me a rational explanation for what I secretly knew I was going to do [solved]Valve clearances 212902. All fascinating stuff tho, and I’ll get on the case next month. Never to old to learn.
Got some low risk jobs I can take care of while the chair is off plus install my new HES when it arrives. All doable in the time available.
Cheers, Stu

Spot on that is usually the way I will set mine up. To be honest I would be looking at replacing the connector to the tank they are very problematic, I now replace these as a matter of course as I have had so much trouble with them in the past.

Dodgy tickover and backfiring and 'rattle' can come from a bad injector......

Olaf,
Funnily enough I did wonder whether or not re-fuelling 5 or 6 times exclusively at motorways in the rain may have introduced something into the system. When you have time to explain what is it with the injectors that would cause a rattle? I’m a lot more comfortable with monobloc amal...

Matt - it's a motorcycle rally up in the Snowdonia area of North Wales and has been held every second weekend in February since 1962. The weather is usually sh!t and most times there's a huge helping of mud to go with it. It was originally started as a British 'answer' to the Elefanttreffen in Bavaria which is held at the end of January each year.

This year was my thirtieth Dragon Rally. When I first started doing it back in the 1980s it was still a 'survival'-type rally. With no money, it was always touch-and-go whether we'd make the 520-mile round trip on whatever piece of two-wheel scrap we happened to be riding at the time. Warmth was always an optional extra at night, but the consumption of vast quantities of alcohol was a requirement. The rally site moves year-on-year. This was this year's campsite and one that we've been to many times:

https://www.google.co.uk/maps/@53.0946411,-3.8873329,260m/data=!3m1!1e3?hl=en

The satellite photograph was taken about ten days ago. Just 'south-east' of the centre of the area there's a couple of big grey mounds. It's a few tons of gravel that was laid and failed to keep the mud at bay for people walking into the marquee. To the north-east of the area you can see a small stream running under the track. We were camped literally just south of the stream on the righthand side of the road. I'm sure Stuart can pick out where he ended up after we'd chatted briefly.

As motorcycles and camping equipment have all improved over the years, it's no longer the survival struggle it has been in long-past years. Despite that, it can still bite you back if you don't take reasonable care. The wind speed this year hit 50-55mph in the early hours of Saturday and Sunday morning, which didn't do a lot of tents a lot of good.

Google 'dragon rally' and you'll pick up quite a few stories.

Matt,
I kept getting ‘marshalled’ down the main track as they needed to take the pressure off the entrance traffic. Got pretty much to the end of the hard stuff before declining to venture into the soft stuff. Squeezed the outfit in between the portaloos and a giant skip. Ended up quite cosy with my big yellow steel wind break and en suite facilities. Sunday morning was perfect sat in the tent porch, music on, hot porridge and much brewing of tea. When I finally struck the tent I ended up packing the chair in a 15 minute hail storm and nowhere to hide. Agree with Dai, not just about modern bikes but also modern riding kit. I had 300 miles to home and wet gear at the start would have been absolutely miserable 30 odd years ago. Also had a 30 odd year old K which got me there without having to get a spanner out. Happy days.
Stu

Thanks all and Olaf in particular,
Had injectors ultra sonicked. They were all a bit under spec flow-wise and a bit unbalanced. All returned to spec by Injectortune and re-fitted. The top end sounding like a bag of rocks in a tumble dryer appears to be sorted, although given that the issues found were only a bit off spec I am surprised that the bike sounds so much better. Road testing will tell. Closed for now and thanks again.
Stu.

You asked about the diagnosis, I have not had a petrol car in almost 40 years, lpg then diesel. On diesels a bad injector or two can really have the car engine all over the place, wrong fuel amount and wrong timing of fuel can mean either overfuel or no fuel on one cylinder and produce a fairly noticeable diesel knock. Put 4 of them in like that and you're all over the place. Petrol engines will of course do the same and to be fair the K engine design means its a lot easier to eliminate that one before going at valve clearance adjustments.
Now pour yourself a beer and enjoy it!

Many is the bike...BSA/ Triumph/Norton/Royal Enfield etc that made a definite gurgling sound due to a mono bloc Amal carby being used ..bigger jets would have been good in the day.... but you can't have both an engine and me sucking through the same jet at the same time ...the engine will always lose. lol Very Happy
