OK, so just before Christmas my final drive has decided to let me find out how stuffed it is. The back wheel has about 1.5mm of movement so I guess I have fluked rear wheel steering. It does make handling a but weird though. I am absolutly broke, having got myself into hock to build the bike and regester it. I need a cheap as chips working diff with the later 20 spline 2 valve set up. When money arrives (sometime in the new year I hope) I am happy to send it back to the owner or pay for it. As then I will be able to afford to rebuild mine . Sorry to sound so pitiful but I would like my bike back on the road as the clutch in my Nissan Patrol has also shit its self and we are 25km from town.

All I have to offer in exchange is a beautiful camping spot next to our dam for as long as you want it and a pretty unlimited supply of home brew (beer only atm)

wish I could help marc ….the final drive I have as a spare (actually for the red frame build,,, needs a fair bit of work before it could be used , and is a 16 spline type ...will be good ...in the end

but I do have a 20 spline drive rt type  from memory , the input splines are shagged and might destroy a good shaft if used ,,,but the output side should be ok , you could possibly split the drive and use the output section ?  possibly not advisable with the wear pattern that would have occurred between the pinion and output bevel , but its a thought at least .

let me know if that's a possibility

you would need to read off the gear tooth standard branded into the top of the housing

and ill check the numbers on mine as well

good luck mate

How hard is it to change the spline bit. I have never pulled one apart? I know my splines are ok but the rest maybe pretty shagged. 32/11 is stamped on my housing

what I mean is ...to take the drive apart  with the 8? screws  that hold the output shaft and housing together . and swap into your bevel box input side housing , you would need to install the shims in your housing around the big bearing also , I guess ..but not hard to do at all  maybe 30 mins ?

the left hand side  of this pic

Another final drive needed 20181044

disclaimer , this is a pic of an rs bevel box , not the one I have for marc...just an example of the process .

ill check my drive and see if the numbers are the same , just moved it to the storage shed a few hours ago  , but can confirm tomorrow .

and if suitable   can ship it to you . if you send me an address

Those gears are matched from new it's not at all advisable to use  gears that are not matched it will destroy both gears.

What Rick says. I've had no experience of building K bevel drives but plenty of experience building Guzzi bevel drives. As the Guzzi gears are also matched and come with the same warning, I can't see that there would be any difference between the two manufacturers.

I have experienced catastrophic final drive failure due to the ring and pinion gears not being correctly measured and shimmed when swapped into another case. They lasted maybe 600kms, or at least that's when I noticed the coffee being ground.

Maybe order one from Canada Marc and have it rushed there by our postal service?  Oh wait, Canada Post is currently on strike despite being legislated back to work.  Sorry to hear that you are temporarily side lined after putting lass that work into the old girl.  I hope you get the final drive sorted soon

My new to me final drive arrived yesterday so with great enthusiasm and a bung knee I wobbled around the shed and removed the old drive. The new oil I put in about 1500km ago is burned and black, the last time I used it there was a clicking sound coming from the back somewhere so I gusee its pretty shot. I lubed up the splines and this is where It all came to a stop. My bike has had the rear drive and shaft replaced in the past with a 16 spline unit Another final drive needed 61740 Another final drive needed 61740 Another final drive needed 61740 . I have a reasonably good 20 spline for trade now if anyone wants to get rid of a 16 spline jobbie.

please dont bother telling me that I should have counted my splines before ordering the part. You know why? Cos I should have counted my F*#KING SPLINES BEFORE I ORDRED THE PART. lol!

Sorry Martin, I misunderstood your comment. I have a good 16 spline shaft, I need a good 16 spline FD. My 1990 bike has been retro fitted with the earlier shaft and FD but the FD is shot
