Have owned BMW in the past and recently came back with the purchase of a 1986 K-100RT with just 8,300 miles on the clock. Very excited to have her in my garage, did 200+ on her last sat and really enjoyed the smooth ride.

Welcome! Was that the silver one up near Williston?  If it runs well, that was a bargain. cheers

Good luck with it.

you are correct and yes runs good so far. Going to do the fuel filter and rebuild the fuel cap and tank seal before I move on to anything else before winter. I know these bikes are not known for their speed but when I am running it through the gears it's a bit hesitant in the second have of the throttle. I know he said he never changed it so I assume it's never been done and figure it's the cheap place to start.

Pour a high quality fuel system cleaner, like Techron or Liqui-Moly, into the tank and with fresh fuel go for a good burn. After a tank has been run through you might see a marked improvement. The injectors likely have a bit of oxygenated crud built up in them. A clogged fuel filter will give you poor running potential regardless of throttle application. Modern fuel 'stales' easier than it used to. Also, the fuel filter isn't particularly cheap in price, tho' less expensive aftermarket FF are available.

As TWB says modern fuel stales quickly, Unleaded has a usable life of three months. After that it tends to separate and leave water and sludge in the bottom of the tank, As you apply throttle the pump sucks this up and as some fuel vapour is present it fires but the water causes a stutter. Drain the tank and put in new fuel and injector cleaner.

Dunno how many authorised BMW dealers you've got nearby you in Ethan Allen country, but the Techron sold at both car and bike Bimmer/Beemer dealerships is 50% more concentrated than the Chevron Techron bought at the local auto parts store. A tidbit from my time in the industry with the Marque in North America.

OMG! There it is on a shelf at Frank's in Essex Center—BMW Fuel System Cleaner-Techron. The price might be more concentrated too, at that location and you might be dazzled by Lester's charming patter into buying an R1200GSA while you're there. New to me 177381

There's Automaster on Shelburne Rd though and from there it's only a hop upstream to Pauline's, since you've already started the cash flowing anyway. Laughing

Pity the poor bastard who buys the helmet just below the chemical shelf. I dunno how many times I had to request credit for partially open bottles that had leaked into everything else in the box during shipment.

Maybe it's so concentrated it's cleaning its way out of its own container.

not fast ...omg !!!  these thing go from 40 kph to 220 + kph in top gear ….and it gets better once you realise that everything starts happening over 4k revs

you may have to reset your opinion keeping in mind that this is early eightys technology when talking about the two valve per cylinder versions  and stop comparing to the latest and greatest high performance technology that will not last the distance comparatively.

given a point to point venture over 500k you may find that you will arrive far more relaxed than the modern and light framed rocket ships  and not far behind if at all ..

there are many casual riders ...and amazingly quite a few revheads that love exploring ground clearance  and chicken strips on kbikes

hope you find the reason for poor performance , but in many cases its just a matter of good service practices ..replace all rubber bits that age with all petrol based issues  .and gleam through the known performance suggestions  found throughout the forum

good luck

Hey, Jeff! Start your own thread in the Member's Introduction section and tell us about your moto and yourself—mostly about your moto if you think personal information would be too disturbing for us. Laughing Post a photo or two of it.

I got the 1985 K-100 RS about a month ago, and I loved it.  I rode a hundred miles or so,  and the Speedo started cutting in and out.  But the reason I looked Your forum up was

because when I went to pick up my son, I shut it off and it wouldn't restart.  And it seems as if I lost spark.

Hi 1958Jeff, please start a new 'no start' thread rather than asking in a new member's thread. Thanks.
