I have the fuel tank and air box removed on my 1985 K100RT so I thought I'd replace the clutch and throttle cables.  I must be missing something easy because I don't see how to remove the  clutch lever so I can remove the clutch cable.  I screwed the adjuster in and removed the pivot screw but can't remove the lever so I can remove the cable?   Thanks,  jim

Dah!   I didn't understand you need to remove the cable from the rear end clutch arm first to give enough slack for the front to be removed.

You've just been stuffed by one of BMW's "make this look neat and to hell with the easy maintenance" tricks. First move: put a towel or large rag on the floor under the handlebars. Not joking.

Release the cable from the gearbox end (if you haven't already done so) and push it through so that you've got lots of slack.

Pull the lever back to the handlebars and wriggle the cable so that the barrel in the lever comes out downwards.

If the barrel hasn't made a dash for freedom and been stopped by the towel, release it from the cable by sliding it along the cable until the nipple is visible. The barrel will now come gracefully off in your fingers/make another dash for freedom. The cable should now slide through the adjuster. There should be a small felt pad on the cable which lubricates the pivot but it's quite often missing.

When replacing the barrel, don't forget the towel! Very Happy Very Happy Very Happy

Oh - and one last point. When setting up the new cable be sure that you have the requisite 75mm between the gearbox clutch arm and the gearbox boss (see Clymer or similar). If you don't, clutch slip is guaranteed.

some good points dai

jim to remove the cable from the clutch arm at the back
perhaps a rag over the muffler near the foot peg plate , a long screwdriver  and lever the clutch arm up so that the gland that fits in the fork of the arm can be released .

then there is adequate cable movement to play with removing the clutch lever stuff

hope that helps

I'm not sure if it's the same as a K75 but here's a video that might help.

I understood there were two cables for Ks, long one for RT/LT, shorter one for RS and basic models.

You're right. That was almost the first question Motorworks ever asked me - long or short cables.

Thanks for the replies.  I did get the cable out, so now I'm waiting for a new cable to arrive.   My cable did not have the little felt piece at the lever end, mentioned above, so hopefully the new one will.  I also didn't know about the wave washer that pops out when the lever is removed.   That little bugger went flying across the garage floor and hid, for quite some time, under a shelf.

Yes, I did have a small towel but what I needed was more of a blanket size parts catcher.   So, your recommendation was right on the mark.
