Hi everyone,

Ref the thread "Advise on buying unseen".

I brought home my new 1988 K100RS on Saturday, my first K-bike.
She is a beauty!

It was a long day on the highway in mostly rain, bringing her back the 500 km from Strasbourg to Paris, but of course all worth it.
No issues during the trip back, everything seems to work, and she is cosmetically well preserved, though not as perfect as she looked on the pictures beforehand.

Very excited to put more miles on her and learn the characteristics, which takes some getting used to.
I now know why it's called The Flying Brick.

I will surely be back soon with questions and cries for help once I start to get my hands dirty.

Thanks Mike.

Yes the tyres date back to 2011 so they are due for replacement. Shame though as they are not particularly worn nor cracked.

There's a supplier in the UK that can provide you with the touch up paints for that bike.  I have the same bike, same colors.  PM me if you want the supplier (eBay).

I meet 88 regularly and we both ride a lot in the wet but I use Bridgestone BT45 and equally happy. I suspect 88 might ride a little faster than I do......Tyre pressures are very important.

I just picked up a K1100LT yesterday and debating what tyres to go on it.....

club_c : thanks for the comment on touch-up paint, I do need some of that! will PM you once I get my head around to making a list of partnumbers and other stuff to order. She does need a bit of work to get her to that perfect nirvana state I'm aiming for!

Just a little tip. If you need any parts then use the Motorworks website to sort out the part numbers that you need. Before you order from them go to your local French BMW dealer and ask about ordering the parts from them. Motorworks are expensive to mail stuff to here in France and BMW dealers will order for free. The parts prices are about the same.
I have ended up paying nearly twice as much for bits from Motorworks, including postage, as I can get them from BMW in Perigueux.

The honeymoon was short-lived and I was reminded today it's a 30 year old bike. Smile
I'm pretty sure we jinxed it, talking about parts....coming home from work today I had issues :
1) The center stand broke straight off when i stopped to gas up, and I put the bike down scratching the fairing
2) The speedometer only worked intermittently
3) The trip meter didn't start up again after resetting to 0000 after filling the tank

I see from the forum that I am dealing with pretty standard issues.

@club_c : that touch-up paint is now suddenly high on the priority list.

Oh mate - this isn't good news  Crying or Very sad

Lets try & put a positive spin on things.

1). The stand needed replacing anyway. Unfortunately it sent the bike over, but it could've been a whole lot worse. Scratches are character (that bit might be pushing positivity a bit too far!)
2). The erratic speedo is most probably the sender in the final drive. An easy & relatively cheap fix.
3). The trip meter is dead easy to sort. Take the clock console off, open it up, lift the instruments out from the outer casing & youll probably find the winder has dropped its washer/spring or even broke a tab off. I initially found removing/opening the clocks daunting, but having done it so many times I can now do it blindfolded.

Thank you everyone for the encouraging replies.
I was a tad annoyed yesterday, but this is part of owning these types of bikes. I shall benefit from all the documented cases on the forum to rectify the issues.

And as you pointed out, I am lucky that these problems are not too compliacted.
Though arguing that scratching the fairing is good for its character is a tough sell.. Wink

If the speedo isn't working then the trip meter won't either.......

Most of us have broken centre stands.

I got a little used complete K1100 stand assembly from sherlocks for a good price and bolted it straight on instead of messing around welding and dealing with seized bolts and worn bushes etc etc.

A lot of the stands rust out internally. I removed my stand then removed the end plugs and filled the inverted stand with LPS 3  then emptied it into a container and let it dry and repeated the process again.  I do this every 5-6 years. The LPS 3 forms a waxy coating, Esso in Bass Strait uses this as a rust protection preventative.
Regards Martin.

Well done Olaf, I did the same, before it brakes.
Much more reliable.
From a K 100 16 velvet or K 1100 all the same.
It’s about 1cm shorter, so it’s easier to put the bike on the main stand.

Cheers

Great input! Thank you.

So I will try to get my hands on a complete stand assembly if possible. I'll leave the base plate only in case I can not get my hands on a full assembly.

I will call around dealers tomorrow to see if anyone has a spare.

Speedo up and working again as if nothing happened. I saw an article on electrical connection overhaul that I will try to follow.
Is WD-40 an accetable contact cleaner?

All that WD-40 does is displace moisture that may be shorting an electrical signal.  The WD stands for Water Displacing.  What you need is DeOxit contact cleaner.  It removes the corrosion in the connection and puts a protective film on the metal parts.

I+1 on DeOxit though wonder if it can be found in Pairee?  I found mine at a music shop specializing in electric guitars and amps etc.

Les french hardware stores / mechanics in Pairee do often carry lesser known brands, true. I'll make sure to pop by the local guitar stores first..

Wd=Water Displacing, my learning curve is shooting through the roof.

Deoxit is an American thing and is a trade name, Whatever it actually is is probably available here in France, but the trade name is not. The only thing that would get rid of steel based corrosion is a phosphate of some sort.
