Long story: I bought another bike. After struggling continually with the K100 and its PMS, I, in a moment of frustration, agreed to look at another basket case: this time a '77 Honda Goldwing GL1000. It was locally available and cheap. It was fitted with a fairing and panniers and mechanically, the bike is great. Engine runs sweetly and the PO used it every fortnight to ride some 500 k's to go flying. But, by appearances, the bike was tatty as hell. A rattle fit of body parts is putting it mildly. While we are getting road worthy and registration sorted, I told him to take the fairing off; as I wanted to build this bike into a hooligan scoot (naked rat bike).

On collecting the fairing bits, I noticed these were BMW fairings; suitably modified (with an angle grinder!) to fit the goldwing. But, the fairing is complete and repairable. Now I'm thinking. Will this fairing fit on the '84 K100? My bike has a round head light which this fairing will accomodate and I'm sure I can, in need, fabricate the brackets to fit.

Had a look on the 'net. Closest is a  80RT. The R100 series don't have those air ducts below the indicators. Seems like an interesting project is coming up ....

1978-on RT, any model R100RT, R80RT or the rare as rocking horse poo, R65RT. The air ducts are common on any Airhead RT, excepting those with "Euro" pop-out driving lights.

No real difference except for the size of the mirrors (later, all used the same style/size), and the rubber shroud behind headlight glass had different attachment points and the glass didn't have cut off corners in early models.

If you wish to fit it to a K bike frame, the Airheads used a pair of short, fine thread 8mm bolts directly in the centre of the fairing's mount, which attaches it right onto the steering head. A k Bike uses offset mounting holes in the steering head. It would be an easy modification.

Seen this lovely example, of course, using an RS fairing instead of the larger, touring oriented RT?

Here is an image of the RT fairing on a K75. Really irritating but the forum web sw doesnt' seem to want to do the right thing and insert the image link here.  Well this is the photo if anyone can't see let me know and I'll do another round of trying to make it visible.

This fairing was off an R100. The RS fairing is considered more attractive but IMO the RT works best for touring. Mounting is not difficult. I used the original mount and welded on two plates to allow use of the four mounting holes mentioned previously. You could get away without welding by using a short length of pipe 4" or so with one cut then spread so you use the two bolts on the original mount to hold it to the pipe. Then 4 holes to hold the pipe piece to the bike. Sorry but no pictures to offer.
