I have the typical busted mounts on the inside of the battery side covers that mount between the fuel (petrol) tank and the seat cowl. I've still got the front pin that goes into the fuel (petrol) tank grommet on each one. Any clever fixes for these?

What I did with mine was shape a small block of wood to fit between the inside of the sidecover and the tab that goes into the grommet. Then I drilled a 1/8" hole right thru the lot and bolted it all together with a 1/8" stainless machine screw. The head of the screw is of course visible. but being stainless and small is not unsightly, or a dab of paint on the head would render it almost invisible.

Hi Robin,
A plan so cunning you could put a tail on it and call it a weasel as Blackadder would say. A good idea to fix this long standing problem/

All I did with mine was glue a piece of metal the correct length to the inside of the side cover which has a hole at one end to slide over the pin on the frame.
To be really serious I would have reamed out the hole so I could put a grommet in.
The "glue" I use is called Selly's Knead It and it is amazing stuff for fixing plastic and there is a metal version as well which supposedly can be threaded, machined etc!

Regards,

Phil

Any chance of a photo Phil? Can anyone else send the odd photo to see what was done?

I'll send in a photo of what I did to see if that helps anyone.

Thanks folks.

My hooks broke off and I used a cutdown pegboard hook to add support to the broken hook.

I bent it a bit to fit in the void, filled it with epoxy and it's held up OK.

That was a year ago and now
I'm super careful when taking the sidecovers off.

I've done the same as Blakey but used a wire coat hanger for material
on my 87 RS
Did the fix ages ago and its been fine

Cant find a pic right now but
on the 85 type side panels I used alloy mesh and epoxy to repair and beef up the
parts that hold the grommets

Hi club_c.
Reading your post, am I right in thinking you mean the pin that goes into the tank grommet has broken off, but you still have it?

Well, that's where mine broke, mainly because the grommet had gone hard with age, needing some force to pull the cover off.

I super-glued mine back in place, then drilled through it and fitted a small set screw with washer and locknuts on the back. There's plenty of room behind the panel, and nothing is visible once the panel is back on the bike.Repairing battery side covers IMG_0740

Of course, fitting a new grommet (after it was too late) has made removing the panel much easier now too.
Regards, Steve

Still trying to figure this out. Don't know if I'm missing so many parts that I'm blind or....? This is an '85 K100RS. I don't think it the side covers had that stick pointing out the back, is that right?

My 88 K100RS did not have pins on the side covers and holes in the tailpiece. It was the exact opposite -- pins sticking out of the tailpiece and "C" shaped clips on the side covers. One of my pins came off and got lost once. I just epoxied in another metal pin as a replacement.
